  • Quinn Hughes is the -667 favourite to win the 2023-24 Norris Trophy.
  • Hughes' odds shortened from -714 to -667 since March 26.
  • At +350, Cale Makar is the second favourite.

Quinn Hughes’ substantial NHL odds lead atop the Norris Trophy favourites list shrunk ever so slightly in the last week, moving from -714 to -667. His odds decrease, however, shouldn’t concern anyone who has backed Hughes to win his first Norris Trophy.

Hughes’ implied probability of winning the Norris Trophy moved from 87.71% to 86.96% in the last week, while Cale Makar’s +350 odds remained unchanged. Those odds come with an implied probability of 22.22%.

On Feb. 26, Hughes had a nine-point lead over Makar for most by a defenceman. That lead has decreased to one point, with Hughes’ point production tailing off. The Norris Trophy favourite has 12 points in the 14 games since Feb. 26, while Makar has notched 20 in 15 encounters.

Hughes’ points-per-game return has decreased from 1.15 points-per-game to 1.11. Makar leads the league in that category, scoring 1.17 per contest.

While Hughes is cooling down at the least opportune time, his work previous to Feb. 26 should be enough to hold off Makar down the stretch. Hughes has the most assists (69), the third-most primary assists (31), and is tied for the 12th-most possible share of ice time (40.8%).

At +38, he has the fourth-best plus/minus of all skaters. That’s significantly better than Makar’s +15. He also has the most even-strength points for defencemen (50), five above second-place Roman Josi.

When Quinn scores a goal or gets at least two points, you can pretty much guarantee a Canucks win. Vancouver is 11-1 when Quinn scores a goal and 17-2-1 when he tallies at least two points. Those numbers are two of the more telling reasons why Hughes is the runaway Norris Trophy favourite going into the final three weeks.

While one can point to various reasons for the Canucks 2023-24 regular-season success, Hughes’ ascendancy has inarguably propelled the team to one of the favourites to win the Stanley Cup in 2024,

2Cale MakarColorado Avalanche+350
3Roman Josi Edmonton Oilers+2000
4Noah Dobson New York Islanders+3500
5Evan BouchardEdmonton Oilers+4500

Despite Josi’s remarkable recent run, which has seen his Norris Trophy odds shorten from +4000 to +2000 in the last week, Makar has the only realistic chance of overtaking Hughes.

And the probability of that happening decreases substantially with each passing week.

He averages 1.17 points per game, is tied with Josi for the most goals by defencemen (19), has the most power-play points (35), the third-most takeaways (64), the second-most assists (62), and is tied for fifth with 27 secondary assists.

The New York Islanders’ Noah Dobson (+3500) has the fourth-shortest odds, and the Edmonton Oilers’ Evan Bouchard (+4500) is the fifth-favourite.

Who Has Won the Most Norris Trophies?

Knocking Bobby Orr off the Norris Trophy mantle will take a miracle. The legendary Bruin won eight Norris Trophies in as many seasons from 1968-75.

Nicklas Lidström almost caught Orr, but finished one shy. He has seven, tied for second with Doug Harvey. Ray Bourque has five, while the following five players are tied with three: Erik Karlsson, Chris Chelios, Paul Coffey, Denis Potvin, and Pierre Pilote.
