The Vancouver Canucks Stanley Cup odds lengthened from +1200 to +2000 after Tuesday’s 3-2 defeat in Game 4 to the Edmonton Oilers.

The Canucks overcame a two-goal deficit late in the third period but conceded the Oilers’ game-winning goal over a minute later, with just 0:39 remaining on the clock. The defeat sends the series back to Vancouver for Thursday’s Game 5, knotted at two games apiece.

Overnight, the Canucks’ implied probability of winning the Stanley Cup decreased from 7.7% to 4.8%.

According to the series’ hockey odds, the Canucks are the +170 underdogs to advance to the Western Conference final, while the Oilers are the -208 favourites after the Game 4 victory.

Vancouver Canucks Strengths

This Vancouver Canucks team overcomes adversity better than most. Despite losing their No. 1 netminder after the opening game of the playoffs, the Canucks have shown an abundance of resilience and togetherness. They were one goal away from stealing both games in Edmonton.

Arturs Silovs continues to impress between the pipes, coming up with countless timely saves to keep the Canucks within reach. In Games 3 and 4, the inexperienced netminder had a .920 save percentage, making 69 saves, many of which were high difficulty. He has the third-best goals saved above expected (3.0) of the remaining goaltenders.

Silovs outplayed Stuart Skinner through the first three games, forcing Kris Knoblauch to replace his embattled goaltender with Calvin Pickard for Game 4.

Rick Tocchet’s team has been outstanding 5-on-5, outscoring the Oilers 11-9 in the first four games. Despite being outshot throughout the series, the Canucks have shown a remarkable ability to neutralize Connor McDavid’s line.

Unfortunately, that effectiveness hasn’t extended to the penalty kill. However, the Canucks should be happy with their discipline thus far, taking only 10 penalties in the first four games of the second-round series.

Similar to the New York Rangers, the Canucks are one of the most opportunistic teams in the playoffs. They don’t fire a lot of rubber on goal, but, with the second-best shooting percentage (9.88%), are effective when doing so.

Brock Boeser has three goals in four games versus the Oilers and continually pops up when his team desperately needs an offensive spark. He leads the Canucks with 12 points (seven goals, five assists) in 10 contests.

The Canucks are 25% on the power play against the Oilers, another bright spot for Tocchet and Co.

Finally, eight of 10 Canucks playoff contests have been decided by a single goal, with all four against the Oilers following that trend. The Canucks are 5-3 in those games, the third-best winning percentage of the remaining teams (.625).

Vancouver Canucks Weaknesses

Despite needing just two wins to advance to the Western Conference final, the Canucks aren’t among the favourites to win the Stanley Cup due to a few reasons.

Vancouver has been outplayed for large portions of the series against the Canucks, at least in terms of shots and offensive puck possession. The Canucks were outshot 75-39 in Edmonton for Games 3 and 4, further evidence of the tilted ice.

The Oilers had 8.82 expected goals in their home games compared to the Canucks’ 5.24. While Silovs kept them in both games, they can’t expect to ride their inexperienced goaltender’s exceptional play to the Western Conference final.

For the Canucks to upset the Oilers, they must be more aggressive in Game 5 and find a way to sustain more puck possession in the offensive zone.

Have the Canucks Won the Stanley Cup?

No, the Vancouver Canucks have not won the Stanley Cup.

They’ve made it to the Stanley Cup Final three times, losing to the Boston Bruins in 2011 and the New York Rangers in 1994, both in seven games. In 1982, the Canucks were swept by the New York Islanders.
