What’s the Highest-Scoring Super Bowl Ever?
At Super Bowl 29, the San Francisco 49ers defeated the San Diego Chargers 49-26. The game had a combined 75 points, which remains the record for most points scored in any Super Bowl.
While this was the highest-scoring Super Bowl, as you can tell from the score, the 49ers scored about 65% of the points.
In the game, the 49ers never trailed. They held a 14-7 lead after the first quarter, a 28-10 lead at halftime, and a 42-18 lead at the end of the third quarter.
49ers quarterback Steve Young was fantastic. He completed 24 of 36 passes for 325 yards and six touchdowns while adding 49 yards rushing.
His six touchdown passes are also the record for most passing touchdowns in a Super Bowl.
Of his six touchdowns, wide receiver Jerry Rice caught three. He also caught 10 passes on 13 targets for 149 yards.
Running back Ricky Watters added 15 carries for 47 yards and a touchdown.
One of the Chargers’ touchdowns was a 98-yard kick return touchdown by wide receiver Andre Coleman. That’s the fourth-longest play in Super Bowl history.
