  • Shohei Ohtani has a 1.139 OPS at Rogers Centre.
  • Ohtani has nine extra-base hits in 58 plate appearances in Toronto.
  • Ohtani gave up two hits in seven innings in his lone pitching appearance at Rogers Centre.

Even though he’s not pitching in 2024, Shohei Ohtani is still among the favourites for MVP in the latest MLB odds. Winner of AL MVP in 2021 and 2023, Ohtani was at the centre of a free-agency frenzy during the past offseason.

The Blue Jays looked to be in pole position at one point before the two-way phenom penned a record-breaking contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. On April 26, Ohtani will appear at Rogers Centre for the first time as a Dodger.

I recently examined Shohei Ohtani’s overall stats versus the Blue Jays, but how does he fair against the team inside Rogers Centre?

What Are Ohtani’s Best Games as a Hitter in Toronto?

Ohtani has had three games with six total bases in Toronto. He had a double and homer in June 2019 and April 2021 and had a homer with two singles in August 2022.

Even with Ohtani and Mike Trout, baseball odds usually priced the Angels as underdogs when they visited the Blue Jays. Los Angeles, however, won all three games when Ohtani put up six total bases in Toronto.

How Well Does Ohtani Hit at Rogers Centre?

Of ballparks where Ohtani has more than 15 plate appearances, his OPS at Rogers Centre is the fourth highest.

He has, however, been held hitless five times in Toronto.

Three total home runs in Toronto is fewer than he’s hit against his former AL West opponents. He’s also hit more homers at Yankee Stadium, Camden Yards and Guaranteed Rate Field. The 148 tOPS+ shows he enjoys hitting at Rogers Centre, though.

How Many Times Has Ohtani Been Walked in Toronto?

Ohtani has been walked 11 times in 13 games at Rogers Centre. He’s been intentionally walked on four occasions, which is the most of any ballpark other than Angel Stadium and Oakland’s Coliseum.

Of parks where Ohtani has played more than eight games, Rogers Centre is the only venue where he has walked as much as he’s been struck out. Toronto’s pitchers have clearly been very cautious with the Japanese superstar.

How Has Ohtani Fared as a Pitcher at Rogers Centre?

Ohtani has only made one appearance as a pitcher at Rogers Centre. He pitched seven innings in August 2022, giving up just two hits and striking out nine while walking one.

The Angels went on to win the game 2-0, with Ohtani outduelling Alek Manoah. Anthony Bass gave up a solo homer to Andrew Velazquez in the ninth inning after Luis Rengifo batted in David Fletcher for the game’s first run.

Where Has Ohtani Hit His Homers in Toronto?

Ohtani has hit three homers in Toronto. Two of them have been to the opposite field.

In August 2022, he took a middle-middle fastball from Tim Mayza deep to left field.

He also crushed an Edwin Jackson changeup the opposite way at Rogers Centre in 2019.

The only time he has pulled a homer at Rogers Centre was off Kevin Gausman, one of the best Toronto Blue Jays pitchers recently, in 2023. Ohtani turned on a four-seamer and launched it 397 feet.
