  • Uruguay won the first World Cup in 1930.
  • The original trophy, called the Jules Rimet Trophy, was stolen twice.
  • Brazil has won the most World Cups (5).

There have been 22 World Cups since the inaugural tournament in 1930, with eight nations celebrating international soccer’s ultimate honour.

But who won the first World Cup? Has England ever been triumphant, and has the trophy ever gone missing?

Who Won the First World Cup?

In 1930, Uruguay won the first World Cup, defeating Argentina 4-2 in the final. Uruguay also hosted the inaugural World Cup.

Uruguay is a perennial South American powerhouse and is often among the soccer odds contenders.

Did Brazil Win the First World Cup?

No, Brazil didn’t win the first World Cup.

However, the Brazilians are usually among the World Cup odds favourites at the BetMGM sportsbook and have won the event the most times (5).

Was the World Cup Stolen in 1983?

The Jules Rimet Trophy, the original FIFA World Cup trophy, was stolen for the second time in 1983. It was also initially stolen in 1966, which I will discuss later.

This time, though, the trophy was never recovered.

Sérgio Pereira Ayres, known as Sérgio Peralta, was the mastermind behind the theft. He was released from jail in 1998 and died of a heart attack in 2003.

Who Was the Dog That Found the World Cup?

The World Cup went missing months before England hosted the tournament in 1966. Bizarrely and thankfully, Pickles the dog found the World Cup, wrapped in a newspaper, close to his home in England.

Pickles’ owner, David Corbett, was questioned about his potential involvement in the theft despite returning the priceless prized possession to the police.

It could be a lucky omen as England went on to win its first and only World Cup months later. Pickle was deservingly invited to the team’s celebration banquet.

Who won the 1966 World Cup?

England won the 1966 World Cup, which took place in England.

It represents the Three Lions’ only World Cup triumph. In fact, it’s the country’s only major soccer trophy on the men’s side as it searches for its first European championship.
