How Many Points Will Canada Record in the Group Stage?

Canada enters the World Cup on home soil with sky-high expectations. Nothing but a trip to the knockout stage will suffice, which its World Cup odds reflect. 

With the expansion to 48 teams, Canada’s probability of playing in the Round of 32 is north of 80%. 

So, how many points will Canada record in the group stage, and where will they come from?

World Cup Group B Prediction: How Many Points Will Canada Finish With?

I predict Canada will finish Group B with four points, which has soccer odds of +333 at the BetMGM sportsbook. 

Here’s how I see things playing out: 

Les Rouges’ first point will come in the Group B opener, which I covered in my Canada vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina prediction. 

It will follow that hard-fought draw with a maiden tournament victory against Qatar on June 18. That will put the team on four points heading into the final group match against Switzerland on June 24.

Even if Switzerland wins its opening two matches, as I expect, it likely won’t be able to rest its starters against Canada, knowing a defeat would scupper its first-place expectations. 

While a draw is possible, I feel Switzerland has too much pedigree and experience for Canada to overcome. 

A defeat will leave Canada on four points, which should be good enough to secure a spot in the Round of 32, either in second as an automatic qualifier or among the eight-best third-place teams. 

While Canada can finish second, I’m also expecting Bosnia and Herzegovina to finish the group with four points, leaving a tiebreaker to determine their position.  

Prediction: Canada to finish group stage with 4 points (+333)
