Canada World Cup Opponent: Analyzing Switzerland’s World Cup Roster

Canada will hope to qualify for the knockout stage for the first time, and its World Cup betting odds to do so are favourable. 

Jesse Marsch and Co. will look to do one better and win the group, an admittedly improbable task. Canada will face favourite Switzerland in Vancouver on June 24, their last Group B game. 

Switzerland is the -139 soccer odds favourite at the BetMGM online sportsbook to finish first. Do they deserve the minus-money odds, or is there a chink in the armour Canada can expose?

Murat Yakin’s squad is replete with personnel plying their trade in Europe’s top leagues. Nine individuals play in the Bundesliga, four play in La Liga, three play in the Premier League and Ligue 1, and two play in the Swiss League. 

Only three individuals don’t play in the country’s top division: Cedric Itten in Bundesliga 3, Michel Aebischer in Serie B, and Zeki Amdouni in the Championship.   

Seventeen of Switzerland’s 26 World Cup participants play in the Bundesliga, La Liga, Premier League, and Serie A, widely considered the world’s elite leagues. 

Is Switzerland Lacking Bite Up Front?  

Breel Embolo, 29, scored eight goals and added three assists in 31 Ligue 1 matches with Stade Rennais, while Nottingham Forest’s Noah Okafor, who is 26 years old, bagged eight goals in 28 Premier League matches. 

Rubén Vargas, who dealt with a hamstring injury from December to March, scored just three goals in 24 La Liga encounters. SC Freiburg’s Johan Manzambi netted twice in 15 Bundesliga matches. 

Christian Fassnacht was Switzerland’s most prolific scorer during the 2025-26 campaign, an unsurprising fact given that he plays for BSC Young Boys in the inferior Swiss League. He bagged 18 goals in 33 league matches. 

Embolo led the team during World Cup qualifying, scoring four goals in six matches. 

If you look at their forwards contingent, there is a palpable lack of goals from the 2025-26 season. 

Excluding Fassnacht, no Swiss forward scored more than eight in their domestic league. That must be concerning for Switzerland, which is among the most solid defensive teams in Europe. 

That lack of bite up front will delight Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina, with both teams looking to capitalize on Switzerland’s most discernible weakness.
