With Team Canada’s roster set to be announced on May 29, all eyes are on head coach Jesse Marsch as he makes final decisions on which players to include.

Canada, hosting the tournament alongside Mexico and the USA, has its sights on advancing to the knockout stage for the first time.

Their ability to secure second place and automatic qualification could depend entirely on the health of two instrumental starters, Alphonso Davies and Moïse Bombito, with both racing against time to be fully fit for the team’s opening match on June 12 against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto.

Canada wraps up Group B action with two matches in Vancouver, one against Qatar on June 18 and the finale versus Switzerland on June 24.

Canada World Cup Predictions

Canada has never won a World Cup match, let alone qualified for the knockout stage. However, Marsch has a talented pool of players from which to choose, and the competition will, for the first time, include a Round of 32, meaning 16 additional knockout stage places are up for grabs.

While Canada’s odds to win Group B improved at the BetMGM online sportsbook after Bosnia and Herzegovina’s confirmed participation, Alphonso Davies’ recent injury has cast a shadow over their chances.

How Will Davies’ and Bombito’s Injuries Impact Canada’s Chances?

I predicted earlier that Canada would finish second in the group. I made the prediction before Davies injured his hamstring during Bayern Munich’s Champions League semifinal second leg against PSG.

The timeline for his recovery was set at several weeks, which would bring us to mid-June. The best-case scenario is that he’d return, devoid of any preparatory matches, for the opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

He wouldn’t be at his sharpest or fittest until the latter stages of the group play at the earliest.

Meanwhile, the outlook is slightly better for Bombito, who broke his tibia in October.

The first-choice centre back should be ready to feature in Canada’s upcoming friendlies on June 1 and June 5 against Uzbekistan and the Republic of Ireland, respectively.

That said, stepping into a World Cup tilt against a side as physical and unforgiving as Bosnia and Herzegovina without playing a competitive match in eight months isn’t a recipe for success.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding both players, Canada has the second-shortest soccer odds (+225) to win Group B behind Switzerland (-125). Bosnia and Herzegovina remains in third (+350), with Qatar the least likely (+2500).

While I firmly believe Canada will qualify, I don’t think it will be as the Group B runner-up. I’m expecting Canada to secure four points and finish among the eight-best third-place finishers.

Canada to qualify for the knockout phase has odds of -400.

Regardless of how it qualifies, those odds are too short for my liking. That’s why I’m pivoting, betting Canada to lose its Round-of-32 match. The +125 odds for that to occur are much more palatable.
