Canada will play at consecutive World Cups for the first time as it looks to secure its inaugural victory at the tournament.
That should come for Jesse Marsch and Co., who will have their sights set on a much more ambitious objective of finishing second and securing automatic qualification into the knockout stage.
Can Canada do one better and win Group B?
Canada will open its World Cup account on June 12 against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto, face Qatar on June 18 in Vancouver, and then wrap up the group stage against Switzerland on June 24 in Vancouver.
World Cup Group B Odds
Entering the tournament, Canada has the second-shortest soccer odds to win the group. Only Switzerland has shorter World Cup betting odds to top Group B.
Canada World Cup Group B Predictions
While it’s more likely for Canada to finish second in Group B, the team will aspire to top the group.
Their soccer odds of pulling off the improbable are 33.33%, so what will it take for Les Rouges to finish ahead of Switzerland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Qatar?
Switzerland reached the Round of 16 in the last three World Cups and four of the previous five. In 2010, Switzerland went out at the group stage, the only instance of an exit at the earliest possible stage since not qualifying for the World Cup 2002.
Does Switzerland Have Any Weaknesses Canada Can Exploit?
Switzerland finished first in Group B of World Cup qualifying, ahead of Kosovo, Slovenia, and Sweden.
It didn’t lose in six matches, winning four and drawing two. One of those draws came at Kosovo after Switzerland had already secured first place in the group, so you can slap a massive asterisk on that result.
Murat Yakin’s team scored 14 goals and only conceded two, one of which was in the aforementioned meaningless match against Kosovo.
That’s a pretty airtight resume for Canada to contend with. However, after analyzing Switzerland’s World Cup roster, one potential weakness could open the door for Canada.
In addition, Canada has home-field advantage throughout the group stage, facing Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto before battling Qatar and Switzerland in Vancouver.
Canada Has a More Favorable Travel Itinerary
Travel itineraries could also play a part in Canada topping Group B. Jesse Marsch’s team will fly from Toronto to Vancouver after playing Bosnia and Herzegovina.
They’ll remain in Vancouver until the end of the group stage. Each of Switzerland’s and Bosnia and Herzegovina’s matches takes place in a different city, with Switzerland playing in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Vancouver.
Bosnia and Herzegovina’s games occur in Toronto, Los Angeles, and Seattle.
While four or five days between games provides more than enough recovery time, Canada’s schedule and travel itinerary are inarguably more favourable.
How Canada Can Win Group B
While I believe Moïse Bombito’s status and Alphonso Davies’ injury will impact Canada at the World Cup will prevent it from winning the group, Marsch’s team still has a chance of winning Group B.
If Canada wins its opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina, the path to winning the group will become clear and manageable.
Victory against the group’s weakest team, Qatar, on June 18 is a must. Marsch and Co. will hope Bosnia and Herzegovina draws Switzerland, which, by the way, is by no means far-fetched.
That would put Canada on six points, Switzerland on four and Bosnia and Herzegovina on one. Canada would then only require a draw against the Swiss in Vancouver on June 24 to secure first place.
That would, of course, lead to a markedly easier Round of 32 matchup.
