There’s arguably no bigger stage in hockey than the Olympic gold medal game – a monumental event that comes around only once every four years.
From overtime thrillers to stunning upsets, the Olympic final is proof that even the strongest teams with the best hockey odds are not unbeatable.
Here’s a list of the six best Olympic hockey gold medal games of all time.
Greatest Olympic Hockey Finals Ever
| Rank | Matchup | Score | Year |
| 1 | Canada vs. United States | 3-2 | 2010 |
| 2 | Czech Republic vs. Russia | 1-0 | 1998 |
| 3 | Canada vs. United States | 5-2 | 2002 |
| 4 | United States vs. Canada | 2-1 | 2026 |
| 5 | Sweden vs. Finland | 3-2 | 2006 |
| 6 | United States vs. Finland | 4-3 | 1980 |
1. Canada vs. United States: 3-2, 2010 Olympics
The 2010 Olympic final between Canada and the United States had it all – legends on both sides, a late tying goal from the Americans, and, of course, a legendary overtime winner by Sidney Crosby.
Crosby’s “Golden Goal” is perhaps the most iconic hockey moment of this millennium, making the 2010 gold medal game the greatest Olympic final of all time.
2. Czech Republic vs. Russia: 1-0, 1998 Olympics
The Czech Republic had a solid but not extraordinary team in 1998, led by star forward Jaromir Jagr and the best goaltender in the world at the time, Dominik Hasek.
Hasek proved his worth throughout the tournament, holding a Wayne Gretzky-led Team Canada to just one goal in the semifinal before shutting out a powerhouse Russian squad in the final as the Czech Republic won gold in the first Olympics to feature NHL players.
3. Canada vs. United States: 5-2, 2002 Olympics
A Team Canada roster featuring 12 future Hall of Famers, including Mario Lemieux, Joe Sakic, Steve Yzerman, and Martin Brodeur did not disappoint.
Sakic tallied four points in Canada’s convincing victory over the rival United States as the Canadians snapped a 50-year Olympic gold medal drought.
4. United States vs. Canada: 2-1, 2026 Olympics
With NHL players participating in the Olympics for the first time since 2014, the 2026 Olympics had a little more on the line.
In a highly anticipated rematch of the 4 Nations Face-Off final a year prior, the United States got its revenge, defeating Canada in overtime to secure its first Olympic gold medal since 1980.
5. Sweden vs. Finland: 3-2, 2006 Olympics
Nicklas Lidstrom scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period as the Swedes defeated the Nordic rival Finns to claim their second gold medal in four Olympic tournaments.
The 2006 team is considered the greatest in Sweden’s history, led by legends like Mats Sundin, Peter Forsberg, and Henrik Lundqvist.
6. United States vs. Finland: 4-3, 1980 Olympics
While it wasn’t technically an Olympic final, the United States’ last game of the tournament against Finland sealed their gold medal win and cemented the “Miracle on Ice.”
The real highlight of the tournament came in the semifinal, when an amateur American team defeated the heavily-favoured Soviet Union, which had claimed four straight Olympic gold medals.
