Poirier is coming off a second-round knockout victory against the No. 11-ranked lightweight contender Benoît Saint Denis in the co-main event of UFC 299 on March 9, which took place inside the Kaseya Center in Miami. This win solidified a case for Poirier to challenge the UFC lightweight title.

As of May 23, Poirier is ranked as the No. 4 lightweight contender, behind Arman Tsarukyan, Charles Oliveira and Justin Gaethje. He is a 13-year UFC veteran and fought 30 times inside the Octagon since making his promotional debut in January 2011 as a featherweight fighter.
