  • On most golf courses, par for nine holes is 35 or 36 strokes.
  • A nine-hole score in the range of 37-45 is considered decent.
  • Typically, playing nine holes of golf takes about two hours.

Golf is one of the greatest sports because it doesn’t require an opponent to create competition.

That’s not to say that playing against friends, family members, or PGA Tour professionals doesn’t add to the enjoyment of a round. But at its core, golf is a contest between the golfer and the course.

That matchup is relatively unique among sports, which often pit individuals or teams against one another. It also creates a scenario where golfers are essentially playing against themselves.

Given that construct, it’s difficult to determine exactly what a decent score on nine holes in golf looks like, but I’ll do my best to narrow it down below.

What’s a Decent Score for 9 Holes?

Like most things in life, a decent score for nine holes of golf depends on your perspective, and that viewpoint can change with age and experience.

Par is typically 35 or 36 on most nine-hole setups, so I consider anything from 37 to 45 a decent score for the average golfer. Shooting a number in that range would require a mix of pars and bogeys and potentially feature the occasional birdie.

That said, if I made Scottie Scheffler one of my PGA Tour betting picks for the week, and he shot a 44 on nine holes, I would be pretty disappointed. That’s why golf has handicaps, numerical representations of a player’s skills relative to par.

Courses also have ratings, as each is different and can provide challenges. If I shot a 47 on nine holes at Bethpage Black, one of the most difficult courses in the world, I would be willing to move the goalposts and call that a decent score.

The same should be done in inclement weather, like rain or high winds. When the conditions change, your expectations should change as well.

What’s the Average Time to Play 9 Holes?

The average time to play nine holes of golf is two hours, which breaks down to just over 13 minutes per hole.

That pace of play is generally sustainable for a group of four. However, a round can take longer or shorter, depending on the circumstances.

Some courses do a better job than others at staggering tee times, ensuring that groups aren’t right on top of one another. I’ve had some nine-hole rounds take closer to two-and-a-half hours when that isn’t done properly.

On the contrary, I’ve also completed nine holes in a little over an hour when playing alone as one of the first players on the course. But on average, if I were to set golf odds on the time to play nine holes, the Over/Under would be 120 minutes.
