The professional golf landscape has changed over the last few years.
The first major shakeup came with the advent of LIV, a breakaway tour that recruited many PGA Tour professionals.
The changes didn’t stop there, however, as a few years later it was announced that Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, and a bevy of celebrity investors were founding TGL, a new golf competition that uses golf simulators, virtual courses, and traditional elements of the sport.
TGL began play on Jan. 7, 2025.
What Does TGL Golf Stand For?
TGL stands for Tomorrow’s Golf League. The vision from the founders was to blend new-age technologies, like golf simulators and virtual courses, with traditional elements of golf.
What Is TGL and How Does It Work?
TGL is a new golf competition that started in 2025. It is the brainchild of Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and sports executive Mike McCarley.
TGL matches blend virtual and traditional golf. Longer shots, like drives and approaches, are played using a large simulator screen, while the shorter shots (chips, putts, etc.) are played on a green that changes shape with each hole.
There are plenty of golf betting options for every TGL match.
What Is the TGL Format?
The first season of TGL features six teams, competing across a five-week regular season. The top four teams in the standings at the end of the regular season will then move on to the playoffs.
Each TGL match is essentially a head-to-head format with three players from each team competing. The matches last 15 holes and are split into two parts.
The first nine holes are “triples,” an alternate shot format where all three players rotate after each shot. The last six holes are “singles,” with each player playing two holes against an opponent.
The format for TGL differs quite a bit from traditional golf, but plenty of elements appeal to fans and those who enjoy PGA Tour betting.
Is TGL Competing with the PGA?
No, TGL is not competing with the PGA. In fact, the PGA Tour is a partner with the TGL, which only holds events on weeknights so it doesn’t compete with the PGA Tour.
