Will Macklin Celebrini celebrate the highest individual honour in his second year as a pro? 

The San Jose Sharks’ teenage sensation orchestrated a comeback win with under two minutes remaining against the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday, again showcasing why he is already being referred to as a generational talent. 

The 19-year-old notched four points for the fifth time this season. The Sharks followed that up by beating the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday, picking up a rare win without Celebrini getting on the scoresheet. 

The Sharks are 2-16-3 when Celebrini doesn’t score a point. 

As his list of astonishing accomplishments grows faster than grass in the tropics, what will it take for Celebrini to win the Hart Trophy?

How Can Celebrini Win the Hart Trophy? 

Celebrini is scoring at a 1.42 points-per-game clip, which ranks fifth. Kucherov leads the way with 1.80 per game, with McDavid (1.66), MacKinnon (1.66), and Draisaitl (1.49) also ahead of Celebrini.  

The question, however, isn’t if Celebrini is better than MacKinnon, Kucherov, and McDavid, but whether he is the most valuable player to his team? 

It’s an unequivocal yes from me, as Celebrini has 51 more points than Will Smith, the Sharks’ second-leading scorer. Of his Hart Trophy rivals, Kucherov’s 41-point lead over Jake Guentzel is the second-largest discrepancy. 

And only McDavid (48%) has scored or assisted on a higher percentage of his team’s goals than Celebrini’s 47%. 

A potential decisive issue looms, though. Will Celebrini be able to get the Sharks into the postseason? 

Only three players (Lemieux, Al Rollins, and Andy Bathgate) won MVP without leading their team to the promised land in the award’s 102-year history. 

So, it’s as simple as this: If the Sharks make the playoffs, anoint the teenager. If they don’t, give it to Kucherov.  

Who Are the Hart Trophy Favourites? 

With hockey odds of -105 at the BetMGM online sportsbook, Nathan MacKinnon is the favourite to win his second Hart Trophy. He’s trading ahead of Nikita Kucherov (+125), Celebrini (+700), and McDavid (+1500).  

As far as probabilities go, MacKinnon is at 51.28%, Kucherov 44.44%, Celebrini 11.11%, and McDavid 6.25%. 

Even being in the same conversation as MacKinnon, Kucherov, and McDavid represents a feat few have experienced. 

But merely being mentioned alongside that triumvirate won’t suffice for the Sharks’ megastar in the making, who is accomplishing things in his sophomore season with AI-like efficiency.

The youngest player to make a Team Canada Olympic roster has 105 points, the second-best in the Sharks’ franchise history, nine behind Joe Thornton’s 114. With eight games remaining, Celebrini is on pace for 116.
