The Toronto Maple Leafs last won the Stanley Cup in 1967, but they’re hoping their head coach, who led the team to first place in the Atlantic Division in 2024-25, can bring them back to the promised land.

So, who is the Maple Leafs coach, and does he have what it takes to end the NHL’s longest championship drought?

Who Is the Toronto Maple Leafs Head Coach?

Craig Berube is the head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Maple Leafs hired Berube before the 2024-25 season, and he led the team to its first Atlantic Division title and a berth in the second round of the playoffs.

The Maple Leafs were Stanley Cup odds contenders throughout Berube’s first year in charge.

Had Anthony Stolarz not sustained a head injury early in the second round of the playoffs against the Florida Panthers, we might be discussing an altogether more favourable outcome.

Berube has been coaching since 2004, the season after his retirement.

His humble coaching career began with the AHL’s Philadelphia Phantoms. He coached the Phantoms for three seasons (two as an assistant and one as a head coach).

He followed a brief one-season stint as the Philadelphia Flyers assistant with another season as the Phantoms head coach.

Since 2008, Berube’s coaching journey has taken him to three NHL teams (Flyers, St. Louis Blues, and Maple Leafs).

He served as an assistant coach with the Flyers and Blues before taking over as head coach. Berube is most famously known for propelling the Blues to the Stanley Cup after taking over as interim head coach during the 2018-19 season.

When he landed the interim role, the Blues were in last place.

What Is Craig Berube’s Salary?

Berube signed a four-year contract with the Maple Leafs in May 2024. Coaches’ salaries are not public knowledge, but some reports suggest Berube earns about $4.75 million per year.
