Martin St. Louis is the Montreal Canadiens head coach. St. Louis’ ascendancy in the coaching ranks was swift and meteoric. 

The Habs coach took over from Dominique Ducharme in February 2022 and has been in charge since, leading the Canadiens to the playoffs in the 2024-25 season. 

The Canadiens were among the teams with the longest Stanley Cup odds at the start of that season and weren’t expected to make the postseason. 

However, a scintillating run in the second half of the campaign ensured Montreal qualified for the first time since losing the 2021 Stanley Cup Final.

St. Louis had no previous NHL coaching experience when he was named the Montreal bench boss. His only previous head coaching experience was a two-season stint at the helm of the Mid Fairfield Pee-Wee Rangers from 2017 to 2019.

For a brief period at the end of the 2020-21 season, he served as the Columbus Blue Jackets special teams consultant.

St. Louis’ appointment as Montreal head coach was more due to his prolific playing career, which culminated with the 2003-04 Stanley Cup as a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
