Who Has the Most Shutouts In An NHL Season Since 1970?

Only five goaltenders since 1970 have posted 11 or more shutouts in one season, with Martin Brodeur, Dominik Hasek, and Bernie Parent pulling off this feat twice. 

Of the eight occurrences featured in the list below, only one netminder went on to win the Stanley Cup in the same season. Parent won consecutive Cups with the Philadelphia Flyers in 1974 and 1975. 

Henrik Lundqvist is the only goaltender in the exclusive club not to accompany the abundance of shutouts with at least one award. 

Goalies With Most Shutouts in One Season Since 1970

T-6: Martin Brodeur (11 shutouts, 2003-04)

Brodeur secured 10 shutouts in the first 53 games of the 2003-04 season before finishing with just one in the last 32 contests. He won the Vezina Trophy and William Jennings Trophy for his efforts. 

T-6: Henrik Lundqvist (11 shutouts, 2010-11)

Lundqvist enjoyed a career-best 11 shutouts in 2010-11, finishing with the most during the regular season, two more than Tim Thomas. 

Six of his 11 shutouts came against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Florida Panthers, and Washington Capitals, securing two versus each team.

T-6: Dominik Hasek (11 shutouts, 2000-01)

Hasek amassed 11 shutouts in 2000-01, one more than the Flyers’ Roman Cechmanek.

Hasek had shutouts in consecutive games three times, two of which came in a back-to-back set against the Atlanta Thrashers. The Dominator also shut out the Ottawa Senators and New Jersey Devils twice. 

He won the Vezina Trophy and William Jennings Trophy that season. 

T-3: Martin Brodeur (12 shutouts, 2006-07)

Brodeur’s 12 shutouts in 2006-07 were four more than second-place Hasek, with the Hall of Famer shutting out the New York Islanders three times and the Pittsburgh Penguins twice. 

While he won the Vezina Trophy, and his accumulation of shutouts improved the Devils Stanley Cup odds at the BetMGM sportsbook in the regular season, they lost in the second round of the playoffs.  

T-3: Bernie Parent (12 shutouts, 1973-74)

Parent secured 12 shutouts in consecutive seasons, the first of which occurred in 1973-74. 

During his 14 years in the NHL, those two campaigns were the only time he finished with more than seven shutouts.  

T-3: Bernie Parent (12 shutouts, 1974-75)

Parent finished the 1974-75 season with six more shutouts than second-place Tony Esposito, Gary Smith, and Rogie Vachon. 

Ten of his 12 shutouts came on home ice, where he blanked the Minnesota North Stars three times and the Penguins twice. 

Parent won the Conn Smythe Trophy, the Vezina Trophy, and the Stanley Cup both seasons in which he recorded 12 shutouts. No other goaltender has achieved that feat. 

2: Dominik Hasek (13 shutouts, 1997-98)

Hasek topped the shutout leaderboard, finishing with three more than Brodeur. 

He didn’t post a shutout in the first 15 games of that campaign, but accumulated 13 in the final 57. Hasek had the Rangers’ number, shutting them out three times. 

The Dominator enjoyed shutouts in consecutive games four times. He picked up goose eggs in bunches, securing four shutouts in six games and another three in four contests en route to the Vezina Trophy, Hart Trophy, and Ted Lindsay Award.  

1: Tony Esposito (15 shutouts, 1969-70)

Remarkably, Esposito recorded 15 shutouts in his Calder Trophy-winning season of 1969-70. 

He shut out the following teams twice each: the Maple Leafs, the Red Wings, the Penguins, the St. Louis Blues, and the Boston Bruins. 

Esposito had three shutouts in four games twice, also securing goose eggs in consecutive contests twice. 

Who Has the Most Shutouts in One Season All Time? 

The Montreal Canadiens’ George Hainsworth accumulated 22 shutouts in just 44 games in 1928-29, the most shutouts in one season.
