  • Wayne Gretzky won the Stanley Cup four times.
  • All his Stanley Cup triumphs came in a five-season span with the Edmonton Oilers.
  • Gretzky collected 32 individual honours and awards.

No matter which sport you’re a fan of, Wayne Gretzky’s name is recognized globally. His decorated career spanned 21 seasons with four teams.

The Great One’s most fruitful years were spent in Edmonton during his prime, where he forever turned the fortunes of that franchise around.

It only took the Great One four seasons to reach his first Stanley Cup Final, and he has a record that will probably never be broken, winning eight Hart Trophies in a row.

Had BetMGM’s online sportsbook been around, I can only imagine how short the Oilers’ Stanley Cup odds would’ve been during their glory days with Gretzky spearheading the charge.

How Many Stanley Cups Has Wayne Gretzky Won?

Wayne Gretzky won four Stanley Cups with the Edmonton Oilers between 1984 and 1988. All of his four Cup triumphs came with the Oilers in five years, and most of them capped off Gretzky’s best seasons ever

He won back-to-back Stanley Cups twice in five years.

  • 1983-84: His first Cup triumph came in his fifth year in the NHL. He led the Oilers to their first Stanley Cup win in franchise history with a dominant 4-1 series win over the New York Islanders. The Great One had 35 points (13 goals and 22 assists) in 19 playoff games, including seven in the final.
  • 1984-85: His second Stanley Cup came against the Philadelphia Flyers in five games. The 1984-85 playoff run was his best, as he notched 47 points (17 goals, 30 assists) in 18 games. His 47 points remain an NHL postseason record. He scored 11 points in five Stanley Cup Final games against Philadelphia.
  • 1986-87: After the Montreal Canadiens won in 1985-86, he was back at it the following season. He led the Oilers to their third Cup in four seasons. He had 34 points (five goals, 29 assists) in 21 playoff games and 11 in seven Stanley Cup Final contests against the Flyers.
  • 1987-88: His final Cup triumph came in a sweep of the Boston Bruins. The Great One had 43 points (12 goals, 31 assists) in 19 playoff games and 11 in four against the Bruins in the final. It was his last season in Edmonton.

What Is the Gretzky Rule?

The Oilers were so prolific in 4-on-4 situations that the NHL implemented the Gretzky Rule for the 1985-86 season.

If coincidental minors were called, neither team lost a man to ensure five players remained on the ice for each team rather than four. The rule prevented many 4-on-4 situations, which players – with the extra space – like Gretzky feasted on.

The rule was reversed for the 1992-93 season.
