The Ottawa Senators are in the mix for a playoff spot in a tight Eastern Conference, but remain on the outside looking in as they approach Friday’s trade deadline.
The Sens have their eyes set on skating in the postseason in consecutive years for the first time since 2011-12 to 2012-13, but they’ll likely need to bolster their roster if they’re going to leapfrog their competition in the final six weeks of the regular season.
Below are three bold moves that could help the Senators make the playoffs.
Senators Trade Market Rumors: 3 Bold Moves To Make Playoffs
MacKenzie Weegar (Defenceman, Calgary Flames)
Perhaps one of the biggest names linked to the Senators ahead of the trade deadline is MacKenzie Weegar.
The Calgary Flames defenceman has not been great this season, holding a poor minus-33 rating, but he is on one of the worst teams in the NHL. On the bright side, he has a track record as a strong two-way defenceman and would definitely slide into the top four on Ottawa’s blueline.
Weegar has a no-movement clause, but he is from Ottawa and would likely sign off on the move if he believes he could help the Sens make the playoffs.
Conor Garland (Forward, Vancouver Canucks)
Conor Garland of the Vancouver Canucks is one forward that the Senators have shown interest in, according to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Citizen.
Garland has ties to Senators coach Travis Green, who coached him in 2021-22 with the Canucks.
The Canucks forward is diminutive in stature, but plays a feisty two-way game that would fit nicely into Ottawa’s middle six up front.
Colton Parayko (Defenceman, St. Louis Blues)
According to Bruce Garrioch, the Senators are mostly interested in adding Weegar to their blueline. However, if a deal can’t be made with the Flames, the Sens may turn their attention to Colton Parayko of the St. Louis Blues.
The 6-foot-6 defenceman just represented Canada at the Winter Olympics and would bring a ton of presence and experience to Ottawa’s blueline.
The price might be steep, but Parayko would instantly become the Senators’ best right-handed defenceman.
