There’s the rich, and then there’s the super-rich, a category the NHL’s wealthiest owners are a part of.

The four richest owners have fortunes worth at least $11.1 million. I’m sure those owners wish their vast wealth directly correlated with their teams consistently being among the Stanley Cup odds favourites.

I’ve ranked the wealthiest NHL owners, with the Edmonton Oilers’ Daryl Katz coming in as the richest owner of a Canadian team.

1. Henry Samueli, Anaheim Ducks: $19.7 billion

Henry Samueli was a professor at UCLA and is the co-founder of Broadcom Corporation, a semiconductor company in the broadband industry. 

2. Philip Anschutz, Los Angeles Kings: $9.1 billion

Philip Anschutz, co-owner of the Kings with Edward P. Roski, has his fingers in many pies, including stocks, real estate, railroads, and more. He also owns stakes in the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.  

3. Stanley Kroenke, Colorado Avalanche: $18 billion

Stanley Kroenke owns Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, which operates the Avalanche, Arsenal, the Los Angeles Rams, the Denver Nuggets, and the MLS’ Colorado Rapids. 

4. Hasso Plattner, San Jose Sharks: $15.2 billion

Hasso Plattner is the co-founder and chairman of the supervisory committee of SAP SE. He took full control of the team in 2013. 

5. Josh Harris, New Jersey Devils: $11.1 billion

Josh Harris co-founded Apollo Global Management in 1990, one of the world’s largest alternative investment firms. He also has an ownership stake in the Philadelphia 76ers and Crystal Palace of the Premier League.

6. David Thomson, Winnipeg Jets: $7.7 billion

David Thomson is one of six billionaire heirs to the media and publishing empire founded by his grandfather, Roy Thomson. 

Mark Chipman, who co-owns the Jets with Thomson, is worth about $500 million. 

7. Christopher Ilitch, Detroit Red Wings: $6.9 billion

8. Terry Pegula, Buffalo Sabres: $6.8 billion

Terry Pegula is involved in natural gas development, real estate, entertainment, and professional sports. He also owns the Buffalo Bills.

Vincent Viola has roots in the U.S. Army and attended the United States Military Academy. He climbed the ranks to major of the 101st Airborne. After his time in the military, he founded several trading and clearing firms. 

10. Daryl Katz, Edmonton Oilers: $6 billion

Daryl Katz is a prominent philanthropistwho recently donated $7 million to the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and theFaculty of Law. He is the owner of Katz Group of Companies.

11. Jeremy Jacobs, Boston Bruins: $5.4 billion

Jeremy Jacobs has an interest in the New England Sports Network (NESN). He is known for his philanthropic ventures, creating his family-run Boston Bruins Foundation.

Jon Ledecky studied business administration at Harvard University, but his career began in journalism. Scott Malkin is the founder of Value Retail, a luxury retail destination provider.

Michael Andlauer previously had minority ownership shares in the Canadiens before acquiring the Ottawa Senators.

Henry Samueli is the NHL’s richest owner. The Anaheim Ducks owner is reportedly worth $19.7 billion. According to Forbes, Samueli is the seventh-wealthiest owner of a sports team. 

Samueli, 70, is the co-founder and chairman of chipmaker Broadcom. He purchased the team from the Walt Disney Company in 2005 for an estimated $70 million.
