The Oilers and Panthers have never met in a Stanley Cup Final. The Panthers are making their second straight appearance in the showcase final after losing in five games to the Vegas Golden Knights last season.
The Panthers, who allowed five, seven, three, and nine goals in the four defeats, hope the lessons they learned in that lopsided final will benefit them against the Oilers.
The Oilers last made the Stanley Cup Final in 2006, losing to the Carolina Hurricanes in seven games. They’ve won five of seven previous finals, with their last Cup triumph occurring in 1990. Their 1990 victory was the only Cup the Oilers won without Wayne Gretzky, who led Edmonton to four Stanley Cups between 1984 and 1988.
Only one of the last 12 finals, the 2019 series featuring the St. Louis Blues and Boston Bruins, went to seven games.
Not only are we overdue for a thrilling seven-game Stanley Cup Final, but the difference between the Oilers and Panthers is negligible, which could pave the way to a decisive Game 7 on June 24.
