The Carolina Hurricanes are not fans of extended playoff games. The Hurricanes lost five of the six longest games in franchise history, with each setback negatively impacting their hockey odds at the BetMGM online sportsbook

Their lone victory among the longest games came in the 2026 playoffs, when the Hurricanes beat the Ottawa Senators in double overtime.

6. Senators vs. Hurricanes — April 20, 2026

Jordan Martinook scored at 13 minutes, 53 seconds of the second overtime period to give the Carolina Hurricanes the 3-2 win, and with it, a 2-0 series lead. 

The Hurricanes won all five overtime games in the 2026 playoffs leading up to the Stanley Cup Final. 

5. Bruins vs. Hurricanes — April 13, 2018

In 2018, the Boston Bruins beat the Hurricanes in Game 5 of the first-round series thanks to Anson Carter’s double-overtime game-winner at 14:45.  

The Bruins won the series in six games.  

4. Hurricanes vs. Predators — May 21, 2021

The first of consecutive double-overtime games against the Nashville Predators didn’t end well for the Hurricanes. 

Matt Duchene scored the game-winner at 14:54, decreasing the Hurricanes’ series lead to 2-1. It was the first of four successive overtime games in the series. 

3. Hurricanes vs. Predators — May 23, 2021

The Predators did it again in Game 4, tying the first-round series at two games thanks to Luke Kunin’s goal at the 16:10 mark of double overtime. 

The Hurricanes outshot the Predators 61-42. Carolina went on to win the next two games in overtime, taking the series in six games. 

2. Red Wings vs. Hurricanes — June 8, 2002

Igor Larionov broke the Hurricanes’ hearts at 14:47 of triple overtime in Game 3 of the 2002 Stanley Cup Final. 

It put the Red Wings up 2-1 in the series, and they never looked back, winning Games 4 and 5 to secure the Stanley Cup. 

1. Panthers vs. Hurricanes — May 18, 2023

The Hurricanes never recovered after losing to the Florida Panthers in quadruple overtime of Game 1 in the 2023 Eastern Conference final. 

Matthew Tkachuk scored the game-winner with only 13 seconds remaining in the fourth overtime period, securing the 3-2 victory for the visiting Panthers. The Hurricanes lost all four games in the series by one goal, including Game 2 in overtime.
