The Montreal Canadiens have advanced to 35 Stanley Cup Finals since the NHL’s inaugural 1917 season, winning the championship 24 times.
While the franchise might make its 36th Stanley Cup Final in the coming weeks, they are the underdogs, according to the hockey odds at the BetMGM sportsbook.
Even if they don’t pull off what was incredibly unlikely at the start of the 2025-26 season, it hasn’t been long since the Canadiens made the Stanley Cup Final.
Last Time the Canadiens Made the Stanley Cup Final
The Canadiens last reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2021, when they lost in five games to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
They faced the Lightning in the final because of the league’s divisional realignment for the COVID-19-impacted season. The Canadiens were slotted into the Scotia North Division along with the other six Canadian teams, while the Lightning were part of the Discover Central Division.
Because of travel restrictions, the Canadiens and Lightning didn’t play one another in the regular season.
The Lightning outscored the Canadiens 15-5 in their four victories, and Montreal’s lone victory came via overtime at home in Game 4.
That ended a 28-year patch without a Stanley Cup Final appearance. Their previous Stanley Cup Final berth came in 1993, when the Habs beat the Los Angeles Kings in five games to capture their 24th championship.
