How Many Goalies Have Won the Hart Trophy?

Only three goaltenders, two of whom played for the Montreal Canadiens, have won the Hart Trophy since the turn of the millennium. 

While each Hart Trophy-winning netminder improved their team’s Stanley Cup odds at the BetMGM sportsbook, none of them propelled their team to glory. 

Which Goalies Won the Hart Trophy? 

Connor Hellebuyck (Winnipeg Jets, 2024-25)

Connor Hellebuyck enjoyed his career-best season in 2024-25, winning the Hart and Vezina in the same season.  

Highlighted by eight shutouts and a 2.00 goals-against average (GAA), both at the top of the NHL, Hellebuyck enjoyed a 47-12-3 record. 

Hellebuyck was the primary reason the Winnipeg Jets won the Presidents’ Trophy, and he allowed two goals or fewer in 40 of his 62 starts.

Carey Price (Montreal Canadiens, 2014-15)

Carey Price finished the 2014-15 season with a 1.96 GAA, a .933 save percentage, and nine shutouts, all career-best marks. He ranked first in GAA and save percentage and tied for second in shutouts with the Washington Capitals’ Braden Holtby. 

Price allowed two goals or fewer in 44 of his 66 starts, and like Hellebuyck, he doubled up by winning the Vezina Trophy.  

José Théodore (Montreal Canadiens, 2001-02)

Don’t let José Théodore’s middling 30-24-10 record undermine his brilliance.

At 25, Théodore became the youngest netminder to win the Hart Trophy, thanks to his 2.11 GAA, .931 save percentage, and seven shutouts. He set career-best marks in each of the aforementioned categories and led the league in save percentage. 

Dominik Hasek (Buffalo Sabres, 1997-98)

Dominik Hasek is the only goaltender to win more than one Hart Trophy, capturing it in consecutive seasons. 

In 1997-98, Hasek had 13 shutouts, the most of his decorated career. That’s tied for seventh on the all-time list. The Chicago Blackhawks’ Tony Esposito was the last goaltender to get that many goose eggs, securing 15 in 1969-70. 

Dominik Hasek (Buffalo Sabres, 1996-97)

With a 37-20-10, a 2.27 GAA, and a .930 save percentage, Hasek won his first of two Hart Trophies. 

Hasek conceded two goals or fewer in 45 of his 66 starts. He added the Vezina Trophy to both of his Hart Trophy-winning campaigns. 

Jacques Plante (Montreal Canadiens, 1961-62)

Jacques Plante started 70 games in the 1961-62 campaign, the most of his 21-year career. He won 42 games, tied for a career best, and posted a 2.37 GAA, a .923 save percentage, and four shutouts. 

Plante also won the Vezina Trophy that season, becoming the first to accomplish the rare Hart-Vezina double. 

Al Rollins (Chicago Black Hawks, 1953-54)

The most unconventional and unlikely goaltender to win the Hart Trophy, Al Rollins won MVP despite his woeful 12-47-7 record. 

The Chicago Black Hawks finished last place, 37 points behind the second-to-last New York Rangers. Rollins saved the Black Hawks from complete humiliation by standing on his head in most encounters, giving the appearance of a competitive team. 

Five of his 12 wins came via a shutout. 

Chuck Rayner (New York Rangers, 1949-50)

Like Rollins, Chuck Rayner finished with a losing record, albeit a much less grotesque 28-30-11. 

He secured six shutouts and had a 2.62 GAA. It was the only award Rayner won during his 13-year career. 

Roy Worters (New York Americans, 1928-29)

In 38 games, Ray Worters posted a sublime 1.15 GAA and 13 shutouts. That’s almost a shutout every three games, one of the best per-game shutout rates in NHL history. 

He secured the Vezina Trophy two seasons later, the only two awards he won in 12 NHL seasons.
