Has Any Team Played in 3 Game 7s in One NHL Playoff?

The Montreal Canadiens are on to the Eastern Conference final after consecutive Game 7 wins on the road. 

The unlikely scenario prompted the question: Have any teams played in four Game 7s in a playoff run? 

The answer is no, but a few teams participated in three Game 7s in the same postseason, two of which went on to win the Stanley Cup.

4. Toronto Maple Leafs (1993) 

The Toronto Maple Leafs battled in three Game 7s in 1993, winning the first two against the Detroit Red Wings and St. Louis Blues before falling in the conference final to the Los Angeles Kings. 

Two of the Game 7s were played at Maple Leaf Gardens, with Toronto winning one and losing the other. The first-round decider against the Red Wings took place in the Motor City, where they won 4-3 in overtime. 

They had the chance to end each series in Game 6, but lost all three.

3. Colorado Avalanche (2002) 

Like the 1993 Maple Leafs, the 2002 Colorado Avalanche played in three consecutive Game 7s, winning the first two before losing the conference final. 

They started the playoffs by taking a 3-1 lead against the Los Angeles Kings, who won the next two to force Game 7 in Colorado, which the Avs won 4-0. 

The San Jose Sharks and Avalanche alternated wins in the second round until it mattered the most, with the latter winning Games 6 and 7, prevailing 1-0 in the decider at home. 

Their luck would run out in the conference final as the Red Wings flipped the script, winning Games 6 and 7 by a combined 9-0. 

2. Boston Bruins (2011) 

The big, bad B’s lived up to the moniker in 2011, becoming the first team to win three Game 7s in the same playoffs. 

The Boston Bruins beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 in overtime at home in Game 7 of the opening round despite losing the first two games of the series. They made light work of their second-round opponent, sweeping the Philadelphia Flyers. 

In the Eastern Conference final, the Bruins beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 1-0 in Game 7, again on home ice. The Stanley Cup Final didn’t start well, with the Bruins losing the first two games against the Stanley Cup odds favourite Vancouver Canucks. 

They won three of the next four games by a combined score of 17-4, forcing a Game 7 in Vancouver. The Bruins shut out the Canucks 4-0 for the second time to win the Stanley Cup.

1. Los Angeles Kings (2014) 

Anything the big, bad B’s can do, the Los Angeles Kings do better. Head coach Darryl Sutter and the Kings became the first and only team to win three road Game 7s.

What made the feat all the more remarkable is the fact that they overturned a 3-0 deficit against the San Jose Sharks and defied the hockey odds in one of the best first-round comebacks in NHL playoff history. 

They are one of four NHL teams that have come back from 3-0. Sutter and Co. moved on to play the Anaheim Ducks, whom they smashed 6-2 on the road in Game 7. 

Their third and final Game 7 win in enemy territory came against the Chicago Blackhawks in the Western Conference final. Requiring overtime, it was the most nerve-racking of the three. 

The Kings vanquished the New York Rangers 4-1 in the final, becoming the second team to win three Game 7s en route to the Stanley Cup.
