The NHL is always trying to expand into new markets, and that has paid dividends for the league, with newer franchises such as the Vegas Golden Knights holding favourable Stanley Cup odds most seasons since their debut in 2017-18.
But with new and relocated franchises also come defunct teams, such as the Quebec Nordiques, who paved the way for today’s Colorado Avalanche.

There are 20 defunct teams in NHL history, with seven of them being Canadian clubs.
The most recent Canadian NHL franchise to be relocated was the original Winnipeg Jets, who played their last season in 1995-96 before becoming the Phoenix Coyotes.
