Adapting to life in the NHL can be one of the most challenging periods of a professional hockey player’s career.

Most rookies would agree with that assertion, but not those who took to life in the NHL like a penguin to ice.

The New York Islanders’ Matthew Schaefer falls into that category, showing such domination that the Calder Trophy hockey odds at the BetMGM online sportsbook were taken off the board with two weeks remaining in the season.

While his rookie campaign was remarkable in every sense, did the probable Calder Trophy winner make the list of best rookie seasons of all time?

Which NHL Players Had Best Rookie Seasons?

5. Matthew Schaefer: New York Islanders (2025-26)

Schaefer’s rookie season provided a thrill-a-minute. Nothing short of remarkable, Schaefer seemingly broke a record every few weeks. He tied for the most goals by a rookie defenceman (23) and tallied the most points (59).

Maybe most impressively, Schaefer logged 24 minutes, 41 seconds per game in ice time, the most of any rookie all time.

4. Tony Esposito: Chicago Blackhawks (1969-70)

Tony Esposito started only 13 games for the Montreal Canadiens in 1968-69, ensuring his Calder Trophy eligibility for the following season.

He made the most of it, winning rookie of the year for the Chicago Blackhawks, thanks to arguably the best first full season of any goaltender.

He finished the campaign with 38 wins, 15 shutouts, a .932 save percentage, and a 2.17 goals-against average.

3. Alex Ovechkin: Washington Capitals (2005-06)

Alex Ovechkin is only one of five players to score 50 goals in his rookie season. In 2005-06, the Great 8 had 106 points (52 goals, 54 assists) in 82 games, finishing four points ahead of fellow rookie Sidney Crosby.

He led all rookies in points per game (1.32), even-strength goals (28), power-play goals (21), and power-play points (52).

2. Teemu Selanne: Winnipeg Jets (1992-93)

Teemu Selanne had the most iconic rookie season, scoring an absurd 76 goals in 84 games with the Winnipeg Jets.

Selanne tied Alexander Mogilny for the most goals in the 1992-93 season and finished 35 ahead of Eric Lindros, who had the second-most goals (41) among rookies. His 132 points are still the most among Calder Trophy winners and the second-most all-time for rookies.

1. Wayne Gretzky: Edmonton Oilers (1979-80)

In 1979-80, Wayne Gretzky took the NHL by storm, finishing his first season with 137 points (51 goals, 86 assists) in 79 games. That’s the most by a player in his first NHL season.

He tied Marcel Dionne for the most points, who played one more game than the Great One. Because he played his first pro season in the World Hockey Association, Gretzky’s first season in the NHL wasn’t classified as his rookie season. However, I’m not disqualifying him based on a technicality.

Which Rookie Scored Most Goals?

Teemu Selanne holds the record for the most goals in a rookie season. He scored 76 goals in 84 games for the Winnipeg Jets in 1992-93.
