9 Best Current Canadian Goalies in the NHL, Ranked

Canada has boasted some of the best goaltenders of all time, including Patrick Roy, Martin Brodeur, Terry Sawchuk, Ken Dryden, and Glenn Hall. 

While the resumes of the current crop of Canadian goaltenders pale in comparison to the aforementioned legends, there’s still some elite between-the-pipes talent. 

So, who sits at the top of the list of active Canadian goaltenders?

9. Jake Allen – New Jersey Devils 

Jake Allen won the Stanley Cup in 2018-19, backing up Jordan Binnington. He was the St. Louis Blues starter for the better part of three seasons before Binnington rose to prominence in his rookie campaign. 

With a career goals-against average (GAA) of 2.75 and a 0.907 save percentage, Allen is one of the best backup goaltenders. 

8. Cam Talbot – Detroit Red Wings 

Journeyman Cam Talbot is playing with his eighth team, where he shares the duties with John Gibson. 

Talbot has switched back and forth between a starter and a backup, and he has a 2.75 GAA and 0.915 save percentage.  

7. Jet Greaves – Columbus Blue Jackets 

Jet Greaves, 25, is the youngest goaltender on this list, and he’s played only 76 NHL games.  

He got the call to play for Team Canada at the IIHF World Hockey Championship alongside Talbot, and he took over the No. 1 role from Elvis Merzlikins during the 2025-26 season. 

6. Jordan Binnington – St. Louis Blues 

Binnington quickly became the most-talked-about goaltender after his rookie season, in which he led the Blues to the 2019 Stanley Cup. 

That was inarguably the peak of his career, with Binnington enduring his worst season in 2025-26. He did, however, help Canada win the 4 Nations Face-Off while securing silver at the 2026 Winter Olympics. 

5. Darcy Kuemper – Los Angeles Kings 

The 36-year-old veteran reached the pinnacle of the sport by helping the Colorado Avalanche win the 2022 Stanley Cup. 

Since joining the Los Angeles Kings in 2024, Darcy Kuemper has the second-best GAA of netminders with at least 100 starts (2.40), trailing only Andrei Vasilevskiy (2.24).

4. Mackenzie Blackwood – Colorado Avalanche

Mackenzie Blackwood has been at the peak of his power since joining the Avalanche in 2024, sporting a .909 save percentage and 2.53 GAA in 89 starts. 

He has formed a formidable tandem with Scott Wedgewood, both of whom split the responsibilities between the pipes.  

3. Scott Wedgewood – Colorado Avalanche

Wedgewood had the best save percentage (.921) and GAA (2.02) of goaltenders with at least 40 starts in the 2025-26 season. 

Wedgewood has taken the No. 1 role in the playoffs, and he was influential in ensuring the Avalanche remained at the top of the Stanley Cup odds leaderboard throughout the campaign. 

2. Carter Hart – Vegas Golden Knights

If you’re surprised Carter Hart ranks as Canada’s second-best goaltender, join the club. Hart deserves it based on his play in the 2025-26 playoffs, where he allowed two goals or fewer in eight of the previous nine starts. 

It represents quite the turnaround for the 27-year-old, who was suspended from the NHL in 2024. 

1. Logan Thompson – Washington Capitals 

Logan Thompson was among the Vezina Trophy odds favourites for a large portion of the 2025-26 campaign before falling off the pace. 

He finished the season with a 31-21-6 record, 2.44 GAA, and .912 save percentage, and four shutouts. He also made the Canadian Olympic team.
