The San Francisco 49ers struggled mightily on defense in 2024, allowing 25.6 points per game (tied for 27th in the NFL).

That was more than a touchdown adrift of San Francisco’s 2023 mark (17.5 points per game allowed), prompting head coach Kyle Shanahan to make a change at defensive coordinator.

Shanahan’s decision to bring in a familiar face as the DC makes a lot of sense, and I think it could help them cover more NFL point spreads in 2025.

Who Is the San Francisco 49ers Defensive Coordinator?

The San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator is Robert Saleh.

The 46-year-old is set for his second stint as the 49ers DC after previously serving in the role from 2017 to 2020.

Saleh left San Francisco to become the head coach of the New York Jets. He posted a 20-36 record across three-plus seasons before being fired in October 2024.

While Saleh struggled as a head coach, he has enjoyed much more success coaching defenses.

His unit helped San Francisco reach the Super Bowl in the 2019 campaign, leading the league in pass defense (169.2 yards allowed per game) and ranking eighth in scoring defense (19.4 points allowed per game).
