If you want to buy an NFL franchise and have at least $7 billion in capital, now’s your chance. I guess that rules me out.

The reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks are for sale, with the franchise set to become the NFL’s most expensive team.

So, who has the financial capital to swoop in and buy the hot commodity, what is the franchise worth, and how much will the sale garner?

Seattle Seahawks Sale: News, Rumours, & Potential Buyers

The Seattle Seahawks were put up for sale on Feb. 18, 2026, by the Estate of Paul G. Allen, 10 days after the franchise won the Super Bowl.

Allen passed away in 2018, and his younger sister, Jody Allen, took over as chair of the Seahawks.

In his will, Allen stipulated that the proceeds from the sale would go to philanthropic endeavours.

As NFL ownership rules require majority owners to hold at least a 30% stake in a franchise and limit the number of partners to 25, the list of potential buyers isn’t extensive.

The Seahawks were valued at $6.7 billion in 2025, ranked 14th of the 32 NFL teams.

Few people have access to the funds needed to purchase what will inevitably be the NFL’s most expensive franchise. Here are some rumoured suitors.

1. Steve Bezos ($245 billion)

Born and raised in Washington, Steve Bezos is among the favourites to buy the franchise. If he does, he’d immediately jump to the top of the list of richest NFL owners.

Amazon’s chairman and founder has more capital than the GDP of many nations, and his company’s headquarters are in Seattle.

He hasn’t officially stated his interest, but the fact that Amazon owns broadcast rights to regular-season and playoff games suggests he’s keen on being involved in the league.

2. Larry Ellison ($179 billion)

Larry Ellison, co-founder of Oracle, was mentioned as a prospective buyer when Allen passed away in 2018. He’s from Washington but resides elsewhere, splitting time between Florida, California, and Hawaii.

3. Steve Ballmer ($124 billion)

Owner of the Los Angeles Clippers and former Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, is from Washington and may be interested in expanding his sports portfolio. In 2024, he said buying the franchise wasn’t in the cards.

However, two years is more than enough time for a change of heart, and Ballmer might find the idea too enticing to turn down.

4. Bill Gates ($105 billion)

While I doubt Bill Gates will purchase the franchise, his name is making its rounds in the rumour mill. Gates expressed interest previously, but there hasn’t been any recent news about whether that’s still the case.

5. MacKenzie Scott ($35 billion)

Bezos’ ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott, is one of the wealthiest women in the United States. She’s also a philanthropist, so she could follow in the footsteps of the late Allen, who will be donating proceeds from the sale to charity.

She hasn’t previously shown interest in owning a sports franchise, though.

6. Steve Apostolopoulos ($9.4 billion)

Steve Apostolopoulos, the founder of Six Ventures Inc., a private equity venture fund, has been keen on purchasing a professional sports team for years. He attempted to buy the Washington Commanders, Ottawa Senators, and Charlotte Hornets.

However, he would need partners to help ease the financial burden, as his net worth is the lowest of potential buyers by a considerable amount.

How Much Would the Seattle Seahawks Sell For?

Some analysts believe the Seahawks could sell for up to $10 billion because of their recent championship and position as one of the NFL odds favourites to win the Super Bowl in 2027.

The franchise will likely sell for between $7 and $8 billion.

Regardless of the final amount, it will be the most expensive franchise transaction, easily surpassing the $6.05 billion the Washington Commanders were sold for in 2023.

How Much Did Paul Allen Buy Seahawks For?

Paul Allen purchased the Seahawks for $194 million in 1996.

What Is Paul Allen’s Sister’s Net Worth?

Jody Allen’s net worth is about $20.3 billion.
