NFL Wild-Card 2024: How Does it Work?

The wild-card round consists of three games in each conference to begin the playoffs. In all, seven teams from the AFC and NFC make the playoffs. The No. 1 seed from each conference is the only team that receives a bye and plays in the divisional round the following week. 

These are the matchups in the wild-card round: 

  • No. 2 vs. No. 7
  • No. 3 vs. No. 6
  • No. 4 vs. No. 5

How Many Wild-Card Teams Play in the NFL?

While three games are played in the wild-card round for each conference, there are three wild-card teams from each. The top four seeds include the division winners sorted by the best record, with the No. 5, No. 6, and No. 7 seeds as the wild-card teams.
