Lions vs. Chargers Predictions & Best Bets for Hall of Fame Game
According to the latest NFL odds at the BetMGM online sportsbook, both teams are -110 on the moneyline to win this game outright.
With both teams at -110, they both have an implied winning probability of 52.38%.
In the Hall of Fame game, it’s rare for starters to play. Thus, I expect backups and rookies to get a lot of the action.
In preseason games where backups will mostly play, I look at the quarterback rotation.
For the Lions, they have Hendon Hooker and Kyle Allen.
Conversely, the Chargers have Taylor Heinicke, Trey Lance, and D.J. Uiagalelei.
Overall, I trust the Lions more. Hooker has been in the NFL for a few years now and had plenty of experience in college. Allen has been in the NFL since 2018 and has 19 starts under his belt.
That said, Heinicke has also logged plenty of starts, too.
However, both guys have fairly high turnover rates when they’ve seen extended action. That said, the last time Allen started more than four games in a season was 2019. Heinicke started nine in 2022 and 15 in 2021.
That said, the Chargers will look to see what they have in Lance and Uiagalelei.
In 2024, Lance made one start and completed 24 of 41 passes (61%). He had zero touchdowns and a pick.
As for Uiagalelei, he never lived up to his potential in college.
Both teams do like to run the ball, too.
Thus, I think we’ll see a lot of Hassan Haskins, Kimani Vidal, Jaret Patterson, and Raheim Sanders for the Chargers. Behind Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery on the Lions running back depth chart are Craig Reynolds, Sione Vaki, Kye Robichaux, and Anthony Tyus III.
The duo of quarterbacks on the Lions have more than the trio the Chargers will throw out there, and both teams have more of a run-first mindset. I’ll take the Lions moneyline and the under at 32.5 points.
Lions win 17-13.
