Why Are the ’85 Bears So Popular?

The ’85 Bears are so popular because they were dominant on the field and charismatic and entertaining off of it.

They’re the only team to score at least 400 points while giving up less than 200 since the adoption of the 16-game schedule in 1978.

Their blitz-heavy scheme overwhelmed opposing offences, especially quarterbacks, as they committed 64 sacks and forced 54 turnovers.

Chicago’s historic defence showed up when it counted most. They outgained their opponents 1,023 yards to 434 in three playoff games and only allowed the New England Patriots to make positive yardage on one of their first 16 plays.

The Bears destroyed the Pats 46-10 in Super Bowl 20.

The heart of their offence was Walter Payton, one of the most beloved and electrifying players in NFL history.

Payton rushed for 1,551 yards that season, helping the Bears run for a league-best 2,761 yards.

Chicago also averaged the fourth-most yards per pass attempt (best in NFC) and was second in average yards per completion (second-best in NFC).

Furthermore, the Bears had nine homegrown first-round picks, with five becoming Pro Bowlers.

Under the fiery leadership of Mike Ditka, the team developed a chemistry so grand that they created a music video called the “Super Bowl Shuffle.”

The video was a pop culture phenomenon, as the players boasted about the team’s strengths, namely the defence, and were manifesting a Super Bowl win.
