The head coach plays a massive role in where teams will end up on the NFL futures odds list. During games, their decisions can be the difference between covering football spreads or losing on the moneyline.
And as we know from Super Bowl 49, the Seahawks’ head coaches have had to make some massive decisions over the years.
Below, I’ll rank the five best Seahawks coaches of all time.
Top Seattle Seahawks Head Coaches in Team History
5. Jack Patera (1976-1982)
Patera went 35-59 in seven seasons with Seattle. However, he was the first head coach in franchise history, so he was working with a brand new organization and system of players.
In 1978, he was named Coach of the Year after leading the Seahawks to a 9-7 record, their first winning season, in their third year as a franchise.
4. Chuck Knox (1983-1991)
After Patera was fired in 1982 and interim head coach Mike McCormack finished the season, the Seahawks brought in Knox. At that point, he had some success as the head coach for the Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills.
He was the Coach of the Year in 1984 while with the Seahawks after they went 12-4, but lost in the divisional round of the playoffs.
He went 80-63 as a head coach and 7-3 in the postseason.
3. Mike Holmgren (1999-2008)
Holmgren went 86-74 over his time as the Seahawks’ head coach, but he led them to their first Super Bowl appearance.
His 4-6 record in the playoffs isn’t as good as Knox’s, but leading a franchise to its first Super Bowl is commendable.
Holmgren is a member of the Seahawks’ Ring of Honour.
2. Mike Macdonald (2024-Present)
Macdonald is still with the Seahawks heading into the 2026-27 season, and it doesn’t seem like he’s going anywhere anytime soon.
Over two seasons, he’s gone 24-10 in the regular season, 3-0 in the playoffs, and has won a Super Bowl.
Under Macdonald, the Seahawks have the best defence in football, and he’s proven to be a fantastic head coach.
1. Pete Carroll (2010-2023)
Macdonald has quite a ways to go to catch Carroll, who was with the team for 14 seasons.
He went 137-89-1 as their head coach. He went 10-9 in the playoffs and led the Seahawks to their first Super Bowl win at Super Bowl 48, crushing the Denver Broncos 43-8.
Carroll then led them to Super Bowl 49, but they lost to the New England Patriots.
