While there have been many Buffalo Bills head coaches who have elevated the team toward the top of NFL futures markets for the Super Bowl, none have been able to win the big one.

That said, there have been some phenomenal head coaches over the years who have made the Bills into football betting favourites.

Below, I’ll rank the five best Bills head coaches of all time.

Top Buffalo Bills Head Coaches in Team History

5. Wade Phillips (1998-2000)

Phillips was with the Bills for only three seasons, but went 29-19, which ranks fourth in Bills history.

4. Chuck Knox (1978-1982)

Before heading west to become one of the best Seattle Seahawks head coaches of all time, Knox was with the Bills for five seasons.

He went just 37-36, but he did manage to win a playoff game, going 1-2 in the postseason.

Knox led the Bills to two double-digit win seasons.

3. Lou Saban (1962-1976)

Saban was with the Bills during their AFL days before the merger.

He went 68-45-4 as their head coach, including a 2-2 playoff record. That said, he did lead them to two AFL titles in the mid-1960s.

He was a two-time UPI AFL Coach of the Year, the AP AFL Coach of the Year, and is in the Bills’ Wall of Fame.

2. Sean McDermott (2017-2025)

McDermott had nine excellent seasons with the Bills, going 98-50 and only having one losing season.

His 48 games above .500 are the most in franchise history. Under McDermott, though, the Bills couldn’t get it done in the playoffs, going 8-8 and never making it to the Super Bowl.

1. Marv Levy (1986-1997)

Levy went 112-70 as the Bills’ head coach, marking the most wins by any head coach in franchise history. The team went 11-8 under him in the playoffs and made four straight Super Bowl appearances, but they didn’t win any of them.

In addition to four conference titles, Levy was named the Sporting News NFL Coach of the Year, a member of the 1990s All-Decade team, and is in the Bills’ Wall of Fame.

Levy is enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
