San Diego Toreros All-Time Greatest Basketball Players

1. Brandon Johnson

Johnson played at San Diego from 2005 to 2010, averaging 13.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.8 steals per game. 

He was part of the WCC All-Freshman Team, was the WCC Tournament MVP, and first-team All-WCC. 

He scored 1,790 points (second in program history), had 525 assists (second), and 240 steals (second). 

Of his 240 steals, 77 came during the 2007-08 season, the most in a single season in Torero’s history. 

He also scored 590 points that same season, the second most in a single season. 

2. Johnny Dee 

Dee suited up for San Diego from 2011 to 2015, was two-time first-team All-WCC, and was part of the WCC All-Freshman squad. 

He averaged 15.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 0.9 steals per game.

Over his tenure, he scored 2,046 points, the most in Torero history. 

He ranks inside the top 10 in single-season scoring twice.

3. Gyno Pomare

Pomare first suited up for San Diego in 2004, and his career there ended in 2009. He redshirted his freshman season and started half of the games during his redshirt freshman season. 

Across 130 games and 96 starts, he averaged 13.3 points, 6.6 rebounds, 0.7 assists, 0.7 steals, and 1.2 blocks per game.

In the Torero’s upset win in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament, Pomare had 22 points, four rebounds, three steals, and one block. 

He was three-time All-WCC and part of the WCC All-Freshman squad. 

4. Scott Thompson

Thompson, who played center for the Toreros from 1983 to 1987, was the WCAC Player of the Year, three-time first-team All-WCAC, and WCAC Freshman of the Year. 

He averaged 12.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 0.5 steals, and 1.7 blocks per game. 

He had 740 rebounds (fifth) and 183 blocks (second) when it was all said and done. 

5. Stan Washington

Washington played for San Diego from 1971 to 1974, hoping to play for a school that would allow him to improve his defence before going on to play professionally. 

He still shined offensively, scoring 1,472 points and posting 451 assists. He held the scoring record until after the turn of the century. He was their assist leader until David Fizdale passed it during the 1995-96 season.
