St. Mary’s Gaels All-Time Greatest Basketball Players

1. Matthew Dellavedova

Dellavedova spent four seasons with St. Mary’s from 2009 to 2013, averaging 14.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, 5.6 assists, and 1.1 steals per game.

He finished his career with 1,933 points (most in program history), 768 assists (second), and 150 steals (fifth). 

He was a two-time Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American, the WCC Player of the Year, and three-time first-team All-WCC, and the school retired his No. 4. 

When his No. 4 was retired, that was the second number ever retired by the school. 

2. Patty Mills

Mills played for St. Mary’s for two years, 2007 to 2009, and averaged 16.4 points, 2.2 rebounds, 3.7 rebounds, and two steals per game. 

He was a two-time first-team All-WCC, the WCC Newcomer of the Year, and part of the WCC All-Freshman Team. The school retired his No. 13. 

He recorded 57 steals in both seasons, which is tied for fifth most in St. Mary’s history. 

3. Omar Samhan

Samhan was an Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American, the WCC Defensive Player of the Year, two-time first-team All-WCC, and part of the WCC All-Freshman Team while playing for St. Mary’s from 2006 to 2010. 

He averaged 13.9 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.1 assists, and 1.9 blocks per game. 

Samham amped things up as a senior, averaging 21.3 points and 10.9 rebounds per game. 

He had 1,848 points (fourth), 1,107 rebounds (second), and 258 blocks (first). 

4. Tom Meschery

Rewinding the clock to the late ’50s and early ’60s, Meschery averaged 16.6 points and 13.5 rebounds per game while playing there from 1958 to 1961. 

His 916 rebounds are third most in St. Mary’s history.

He was a first-team All-American, two-time third-team All-American, WCC Player of the Year, two-time first-team All-WCC, and second-team All-WCC, and the school retired his No. 31. This was their first retired number in program history. 

5. Jock Landale

Coming in at No. 5 is Landale, who most recently played for St. Mary’s (2014 to 2018).

He was a consensus second-team All-American, WCC Player of the Year, two-time first-team All-WCC, and an Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American. 

He averaged 13.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 0.7 blocks per game. 

As a senior, he averaged a double-double with 21.1 points and 10.2 rebounds. 

Landale had 1,658 points (seventh), 94 blocks (seventh), and 843 rebounds (fifth).
