Liberty Flames All-Time Greatest Basketball Players
1. Darius McGhee
McGhee played for Liberty for five seasons from 2018 to 2023. He didn’t start any games as a freshman.
Over his final two seasons, he averaged 24.6 points and 22.8 points per game.
Looking at the full scope of his career, which was 168 games and 132 starts, he averaged 16.0 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.1 steals.
He scored 2,685 points (most in program history) and had 528 3-point shots made (first).
McGhee holds two of the top three single-season scoring records, including 821 during the 2022-23 season.
He also holds the top two single-season 3-point shots made records. The top is 162 during the 2022-23 season.
McGhee was a three-time ASUN Player of the Year, three-time first-team All-ASUN, and the ASUN Tournament MVP.
2. Karl Hess
Hess played at Liberty from 1976 to 1980 and put up 2,373 points (first) and 648 assists (second).
He holds the single-season scoring record with 972 points during the 1979-80 season.
Hess played for Liberty during the NAIA days. They moved to Division II in 1980 and to Division I in 1988.
3. Larry Blair
Blair was at Liberty from 2003 to 2007, averaging 18.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.8 steals per game.
He scored 2,211 points (third), had 227 3-point shots made (fourth), and 221 steals (fifth).
Blair is second-team All-Big South, was Big South Freshman of the Year, was first-team All-Big South, and was a member of the Big South All-Freshman team.
4. Jesse Sanders
Sanders had 727 assists from 2008 to 2012, ranking second in single-season assists with 255 (2011-12). This was one shy of tying and two shy of breaking Ed Gomes’s record of 256 during 1975-76.
That said, Sanders’ record came during the Division I era.
Sanders was an Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American, the Big South Player of the Year, and two-time first-team All-Big South.
5. Bailey Alston
After transferring from Rutgers, Alston played for Liberty for two seasons in Division I from 1988 to 1990. He also played there in 1987-88 when they were still Division II.
He averaged 24.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.6 steals per game.
Alston holds two of the top six single-season scoring records, headlined by 756 during the 1987-88 season.
