5 Best DePaul Blue Demons Basketball Players, Ranked

The DePaul Blue Demons have never made the national championship game, but they’ve been to the Final Four twice: 1943 to 1979.

1. George Mikan

Mikan played for DePaul from 1942 to 1946. He was a two-time Helms Player of the Year (top men’s college basketball player), the Sporting News Player of the Year, and a three-time consensus All-American. The school retired his No. 99. 

He scored 1,870 points (fifth in program history), including 53 against Rhode Island during the 1944-45 season. That’s the most in a single game in DePaul history. He also recorded 154 blocks (second). 

He’s enshrined in the College Basketball Hall of Fame. 

2. Mark Aguirre

Aguirre scored 2,182 points from 1978 to 1981, the most in DePaul history. 

He also holds the top two single-season records, headlined by 767 points in 1978-79. 

Aguirre was the Associated Press Player of the Year, UPI Player of the Year, and two-time consensus first-team All-American. DePaul retired his No. 24. 

Aguirre is enshrined in the College Basketball Hall of Fame. 

3. Terry Cummings

Cummings played for DePaul from 1979 to 1982. He scored 624 points during the 1981-82 season, the seventh-most in a single season. 

He also had 857 rebounds (seventh). 

Cummings was a consensus first-team All-American, and his No. 32 was retired by the program. 

4. Dave Corzine

Corzine scored 1,896 points over his career from 1974 to 1978 (fourth). This included 630 points in 1977-78 (sixth). Corzine is also DePaul’s all-time leader in rebounds with 1,151. The next closest has 972. 

Corzine was a second-team and third-team All-American, and his No. 40 was retired. 

His most defining moment at DePaul was scoring 46 points against Louisville in the NCAA Tournament, which sent the Blue Demons to the Elite Eight. 

5. Rod Strickland

Strickland was a third-team All-American in 1988, rounding out his career at DePaul, which spanned from 1985 to 1988. 

He also had 557 assists (third) and 204 steals (second). 

Strickland had 201 assists in 1987-88, the second-most in a single season in Blue Demons history.
