Vince Carter Hall of Fame Moments & Facts

Carter’s presenters were Tracy McGrady and Julius Erving.

McGrady and Carter are cousins, as both were teammates on the Toronto Raptors from 1998-2000.

Erving was Carter’s favourite basketball player and hero growing up.

Carter began his career in Toronto, helping elevate basketball in a country where hockey is the predominant sport. With his high-flying dunks and ability, he transformed a laughingstock into a team with good NBA odds of winning a championship as soon as his second season in the league.

“I had some memorable moments with that organization, which created ‘Vinsanity,’ which is why without a doubt, I’m going into the Hall of Fame as a Raptor,” Carter said.

Of course, Air Canada’s signature moment came in the 2000 dunk contest when he pulled off a 360 windmill, through-the-legs, and arm-in-the-rim dunk, but Half-Man/Half-Amazing was more than just a dunker.

Carter went bucket for bucket with Allen Iverson in the Raptors’ second-round playoff series against the Philadelphia 76ers in 2001. He was a lucky bounce away from sending the eventual Eastern Conference champions home in Game 7.

VC thanked AI in his speech, calling that series one of the best times of his life.

Carter shared that his “crazy aunt” was ready to fight all 19,800 booing fans in Toronto while he was a member of the New Jersey Nets, playing in an arena filled with “VC sucks” chants. He had some of the best games of his career rocking a Nets uniform in Toronto, including a game-winning 3-pointer in his second game back.

“I say thank you for your cheers and your boos,” Carter said. “It’s been a motivating force to make it to 22 years in the league. I never took it personal, I know how we are as fans that love our sports teams, but, man, it’s been an honour to fly in arenas for your entertainment.”

An emotional Carter thanked his mom, Michelle, for making sure he made the effort to learn a little bit about a lot of things to open up doors and opportunities in life.

Carter thanked the late Kobe Bryant for helping him come to terms with retirement. He recalled conversations with Bryant during his record-setting final NBA season when his Atlanta Hawks faced the Nets in Brooklyn just a month before Bryant’s death. Carter admitted that before those talks, he struggled to even say the words “retiring” or “retirement.”

The new Hall of Famer closed his speech with powerful wisdom.

“In life, we go through obstacles that are filled with ups and downs, goods and bads, and everything in between,” Carter said. “It seems like a gauntlet you’re going through, but we somehow figure it out — either on your own, from a coach, teammate, co-workers, boss, or even through life experiences. It gets us to the finish line.

“When we look back at the process, we have a greater appreciation for what we’ve experienced. Take those experiences and give them to the next generation. Drop those gems. Because remember, it was done for us. We have to keep the cycle going.”

This quote perfectly encapsulates how the eight-time All-Star embraced his mentorship role in the later stages of his career.

Carter averaged 16.7 points across 1,541 career games, the third-most games ever played. He finished his career with 25,728 total points.
