Brooklyn Nets 2024-25 Season Preview, Predictions, & Odds

After an underwhelming season in which they won just 32 games, the Brooklyn Nets traded away Mikal Bridges to kick-start their rebuild.

The NBA odds market sees Brooklyn as one of the worst teams in the league next season.

Nets fans will be hoping the basketball odds gods come through and help them secure a top pick in next year’s draft, which could help them land Cooper Flagg or Ace Bailey, among several other talented players, in a loaded draft class.

The Nets sent Bridges across the Brooklyn Bridge to their crosstown rival, netting five future first-round picks and a potential pick swap from the New York Knicks.

The Nets desperately hoped that the Villanova product would be the face of the franchise after being the centrepiece of the Kevin Durant trade to the Phoenix Suns.

However, Bridges failed to average at least 20 points per game on a team void of many scoring options and struggled to defend at the level he’s proven capable. It didn’t help that he was seen liaising with his former Nova teammates on the Knicks any chance he got, seemingly sending a message that he wanted to join them, which ended up coming true. 

In a separate deal with the Houston Rockets, the Nets reacquired control of their first-round picks in 2025 and 2026 that they gave up in the trade that sent James Harden to Brooklyn, relinquishing the first-round draft picks they acquired from the Suns in the Durant trade. 

These were excellent moves made by GM Sean Marks. The roster the Nets had last season inspired no hope toward the future, but now they get to control their destiny by having control of their own first-round draft picks rather than hoping things fall apart in Phoenix.

The Nets hiring Jordi Fernández as their next head coach could also prove to be a sound decision, as he’s known for player development and building relationships with players, something that resonates with a young roster.

Brooklyn Nets 2024-25 Betting Prediction

Prediction: Under 19.5 Wins (-110)

I predict that the Nets will finish under 19.5 wins next season.

Veterans such as Bojan Bogdanović, Ben Simmons, Dennis Schröder, Dorian Finney-Smith, and Cam Johnson could get a ton of minutes early in the season, with the Nets hoping to showcase them to contending teams interested in adding pieces for their championship run.

However, their minutes will likely decrease as the season progresses, with the Nets expected to give the young guns extended playing time to help them develop and establish themselves as part of the team’s future core.

Cam Thomas’ development is something to monitor. He averaged 22.5 points per game on 44.2% shooting, showcasing a strong midrange pull-up jumper, a catch-and-shoot 3-point shot, and a quick first step that allows him to finish at the rim efficiently. However, he needs to improve his playmaking and overall decision-making to become a bona fide top option on a championship-contending team.

Nic Claxton should also continue to serve as a solid scorer in the paint, where he’ll generate a ton of looks off the pick-and-roll, lobs, and shovel passes. Claxton will also continue to be one of the best rim protectors and switchable defenders in the league. 

The Nets may have found themselves studs in Jalen Wilson and Noah Clowney.

Wilson is a threat to shoot from deep and attack the rim, as he won Summer League MVP after averaging 21.8 points on 47.3% shooting, including 55% from 3-point land (on eight attempts per game).

Clowney displayed a ton of promise late last season on the glass, shot blocker, and finisher inside the paint. His size and athleticism fit in very well in the modern NBA.

With the Nets projected to have $70 million in cap space in 2025 free agency and tons of draft capital, including a shot at one of the top draft picks in next year’s draft, their rebuild may end up being short-lived, but I expect a lot of losses next season.
