There are plenty of options for MLS betting in Canada.
With online sports betting legal in Ontario, Canada, soccer betting is available throughout the MLS season, including regular-season and playoff matches.
How to Read MLS Betting Odds & Lines
Soccer betting lines can vary wildly compared to other sports, so reading the odds correctly is a must. When there’s a minus before the odds, such as -120 on Toronto FC to win, it means they’re favoured to win.
As such, a win will return less than the original wager. If someone were to bet that example, a successful $12 bet on the Reds would return $10 in profit.
Conversely, a plus sign before the odds means the team is the underdog, and a win would return more than the original wager. If someone bets CF Montreal to win at +150, a $10 bet would earn $15 in profit.
Types of MLS Bets Online
Below are a few examples of soccer betting options.
MLS Moneyline Bets
Moneyline bets are the most straightforward bets available. However, unlike most sports, soccer bets have three possible outcomes rather than two. Also, unlike most sports, a draw on a soccer moneyline bet is graded as a loss, not a push.
For a soccer moneyline bet, bettors can either bet on one of the two teams to win or bet on the match to end in a draw. Most of the time, draw bets will carry high odds.
MLS Spread Bets
Spread bets require teams to win by a certain margin or more. Most soccer spreads will either be -0.5 or +0.5, with a few matches going to -1.5 or higher. For example, if Toronto FC is favoured by -0.5, it must win by one goal or more for a successful bet.
Because there isn’t a lot of scoring in soccer, the payouts on these lines can vary widely. In general, the stronger a team is, the worse the odds will be for them to cover a smaller spread.
Major League Soccer Totals
Totals bets are straightforward: They’re bets on how many goals will be scored in the match. Bettors can bet on the match total being over or under the projected total, usually 2.5 or 3.5 goals. Like with spread bets, the lines on these odds vary.
Higher scoring teams will see odds closer to -150 for an over bet, while lower scoring teams will see the reverse.
MLS Parlays
Parlay bets combine two or more matches to increase the payout of a successful bet. For example, if the Vancouver Whitecaps and Toronto FC both go off at -150 on the moneyline, a bettor can take both teams to win and increase the value on one bet to +178.
However, with parlay bets, every leg of the wager must hit in order to win money. The odds increase with each leg added, but so does the risk.
MLS Prop Bets
MLS betting offers several prop bets, both related to the outcome and beyond the final score. One of the most popular prop plays is a double chance bet. This allows bettors to bet on a team to either win or draw the match, giving two possible ways to win out of three.
Other prop bets include who will score the first goal, when the first goal will be scored, how many corners each team will have, whether a team will get a red card, and the correct final score. These bets become more available as match time approaches.
Major League Soccer Futures Betting
Futures bets are available throughout the MLS season. Futures bets can include backing a team to win the MLS Cup, betting on a team to win their conference, and betting on a team’s point total for the season.
MLS Live Betting
Live betting on MLS matches is available once the match has begun. Moneyline, totals, double-chance plays, and more update as the match progresses.
Prices and odds can change throughout the match, and a goal can lead to a drastic swing in the odds.
Major League Soccer Same-Game Parlays
Same-game parlays are a common option for MLS betting.
Options include a win-to-nil bet, which means betting on a team to win and shut out its opponent, and betting on a team to win and go over or under the total.
