  • Taylor Twellman is New England’s all-time leading scorer with 101 MLS goals.
  • Steve Ralston was one of three Revs to start in four MLS Cups.
  • Carles Gil is the club captain and its all-time leader in assists.

The New England Revolution are one of three MLS charter franchises that have yet to win an MLS Cup.

New England has had the worst luck of the three, making a league-record five MLS Cup appearances without lifting the trophy.

The Revolution’s trophy cabinet isn’t empty, however, as the club has won an MLS Supporters’ Shield (2021) and U.S. Open Cup (2007).

Below, I’ll look back on some of the stars from those teams as I assemble a list of the five best New England Revolution players of all time.

New England Revolution All-Time Greatest Players

1. Taylor Twellman

Young fans watching MLS today will know Twellman as an analyst and commentator, but he was once one of the league’s most prolific players.

The 5-foot-11 forward spent eight seasons with New England, scoring 101 goals in 174 appearances before retiring at the age of 30 after suffering multiple concussions.

Twellman earned MLS MVP honours in 2005, recording 17 goals and seven assists. That season, he topped the league scoring chart for a second time and helped the Revs reach the MLS Cup.

He scored in New England’s 2007 U.S. Open Cup triumph over FC Dallas and remains the club’s all-time leading scorer. Twellman’s No. 20 has been unofficially retired by the Revs, as no player has worn it since he hung up his boots.

2. Steve Ralston

When Ralston retired in 2020, he wasn’t just the Revolution’s all-time assists leader (73); he was also the league’s career assists leader (135).

The midfielder, who began his career with the Tampa Bay Mutiny in 1996, was one of three Revs players to start in four MLS Cups (2002, 2005, 2006, and 2007). He also captained the 2007 Open Cup-winning side.

3. Carles Gil

As the current club captain, Gil plays a significant role in the Revolution’s MLS odds.

The Spanish attacking midfielder joined the club in 2019 and made an instant impact, leading the team with 10 goals and 14 assists en route to being named MLS Newcomer of the Year.

Two years later, Gil became the second player in franchise history to win MLS MVP, earning the honour after registering four goals and a league-high 18 assists and helping the Revs win the Supporters’ Shield.

In April 2025, New England’s No. 10 became the club’s all-time assists leader, passing Ralston with his 74th helper in league play.

4. Matt Reis

Reis was one of the Revolution’s longest-serving players, spending 11 seasons at the club. The 6-foot-1 goalkeeper made three MLS Cup appearances during his tenure and won the U.S. Open Cup in 2007.

The Atlanta native played 254 regular-season games for New England, the most of any goalkeeper, and also holds the club record for clean sheets (66).

5. Diego Fagundez

When I look to bet on soccer games at an online sportsbook, I like to target versatile midfielders like Fagundez.

The Uruguayan was one of the club’s greatest homegrown players, recording 53 goals and 45 assists in 261 regular-season appearances before joining expansion side Austin FC in 2021.
