  • Shane Victorino and Jim Thome share the record for the most grand slams in the playoffs.
  • Victorino and Thome have hit two apiece.
  • Seventy-five different players have hit postseason grand slams.

A total of 77 grand slams have been hit in the MLB playoffs. These moments can have a massive impact on baseball odds, given how drastically a slam can impact a team’s chance of winning the World Series in that game.

Who Has the Most Grand Slams in MLB Playoffs History?

Shane Victorino and Jim Thome hold the MLB record for most grand slams in the playoffs with two.

A total of 73 other players have hit a postseason grand slam, including Buster Posey, Francisco Lindor, Mickey Mantle, and Yogi Berra.

Victorino’s first grand slam was also the first in Philadelphia Phillies postseason history. Coming to the plate after pitcher Brett Myers drew a two-out, nine-pitch walk, Victorino gave the Phils a 5-1 lead in Game 2 of the 2008 NLDS.

His second was in the 2013 ALCS for the Boston Red Sox. Down 2-1 to the Detroit Tigers in the bottom of the seventh, Victorino fell behind 0-2 to two curveballs but then crushed a third straight curve over the Green Monster at Fenway Park.

Victorino’s grand slams were part of victorious postseason runs, with the Phillies and Red Sox winning the World Series in 2008 and 2013, respectively.

Thome was the first player with multiple postseason grand slams, hitting his first in 1998 and his second in 1999. Neither were as clutch as Victorino’s, however.

In 1998, his slam couldn’t prevent a Cleveland loss to the New York Yankees, who won Game 6 of the ALCS and advanced to the World Series. In the 1999 ALDS, Thome made a 7-1 lead into an 11-1 lead in the fourth inning against the Red Sox.

With the expansion of the playoffs, hitters on teams regularly among the World Series favourites in MLB odds will have a good chance of joining Victorino and Thome.

Elmer Smith hit the first postseason grand slam in the 1920 World Series. Smith’s first-inning blast was unfortunately overshadowed when the only unassisted triple play in Fall Classic history was turned four innings later.

Who Has the Most Grand Slams in MLB History?

Alex Rodriguez has the most grand slams in MLB history with 25. All 25 of which were hit during the regular season.

Rodriguez took the record from Lou Gehrig in 2013. Gehrig had a career 1.175 OPS with the bases loaded, which remains the third-best mark in MLB history of players with at least 100 bases-loaded plate appearances.

One of six players with 18 or more grand slams, Robin Ventura is the only player to record a grand slam in both games of a doubleheader. Don Mattingly and Travis Hafner are tied for the most grand slams in a season with six, achieving the feat in 1987 and 2006, respectively.
