  • The Oakland A’s are relocating to Las Vegas.
  • Oakland has been the home of the Athletics since 1968.
  • The Athletics will play in Sacramento for the next three seasons.

The Oakland Athletics are controversially relocating at the end of the 2024 season, but their daily MLB odds and futures baseball betting markets will still be available at the BetMGM online sportsbook.

The A’s have been in Oakland since 1968 and will become the first MLB franchise to relocate since the Montreal Expos became the Washington Nationals during the 2004-05 offseason.

Where Are the Oakland A’s Moving To?

The Oakland A’s are moving to Las Vegas. This is a familiar story for Oakland sports fans after they saw the Oakland Raiders become the Las Vegas Raiders in 2020. The Golden State Warriors also departed Oakland to play in San Francisco in 2019.

Previously the largest market in the country with no teams in the men’s major sports leagues, Las Vegas will be among the smallest markets to have three teams in the major leagues once the A’s complete their move.

Where Are the Oakland A’s Playing in 2025?

The Oakland A’s will play in Sacramento in 2025. They will use Sutter Health Park, home of the Sacramento River Cats, as their home ballpark in 2025, 2026, and 2027. With a capacity of 14,014, this will be the smallest stadium in the majors.

There are also concerns about Sacramento’s hot summers. With the River Cats and Athletics sharing a stadium, Sutter Health Park will see its grass outfield replaced with artificial turf, which has been widely criticized.

Dianne Woelke, a member of an advocacy group against artificial turf, said, “Elite athletes, they refuse to play on plastic surfaces. The women’s national soccer team fought for the right to not play on synthetic turf.”

Woelke also mentioned the “heat islands” created by artificial turf.

Susan Slusser, a baseball reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle, said, “I guarantee that there are going to be nonstop complaints from agents and players, particularly visiting players, the next few years if they are in Sacramento. And I think the Giants have concerns about their top prospects playing on artificial turf.”

When Will the Oakland A’s Move to Las Vegas?

The Oakland A’s are scheduled to move to Las Vegas for the 2028 season. Construction is yet to begin on a new ballpark in Vegas, though there are plans for a 33,000-seater stadium.

Work on the new stadium should begin in 2025. The Nevada Legislature provided $380 million to help the A’s build their new home.

Who Owns the Oakland A’s

John Fisher owns the Oakland A’s. He bought the franchise for $180 million. In March 2024, Forbes listed the A’s at a value of $1.2 billion. Roger Noll, an economics professor at Stanford, has projected the A’s could be worth $2.5 billion once they move to Las Vegas.

According to Forbes, Fisher’s net worth is $3 billion. The Athletics have had the lowest payroll in the majors in 2023 and 2024.

While Fisher claimed that the organization had been losing money yearly, a Forbes report claimed it had over $60 million in profit in 2022.
