MLB Record for Most Wins in a Season
The 1906 Chicago Cubs and 2001 Seattle Mariners share the record for the most wins in a season in MLB history with 116.
Chicago lost the World Series to the Chicago White Sox, while the Mariners fell in the 2001 ALCS to the New York Yankees. The Cubs posted the best winning percentage in MLB history with .763.
The 1906 Cubs team had four Hall of Famers and led the majors in runs scored and fewest runs allowed.
In contrast, the 2001 Mariners had waved goodbye to household names in Randy Johnson, Ken Griffey Jr., and Alex Rodriguez in recent years but rode a spectacular campaign from Ichiro Suzuki to amass 116 wins.
Like the Cubs, the Mariners had the most runs scored and the fewest allowed. They sent eight players to the All-Star Game.

Of the seven teams to win 110 or more games, only three went on to win the World Series. Racking up regular-season wins doesn’t always equate to postseason success.
The expansion of the playoffs in recent decades has made it much harder for teams with 100+ wins to win the World Series, as was evident when the 2021 San Francisco Giants and 2022 Los Angeles Dodgers lost in the NLDS.
With the number of games changing in a season throughout MLB history, some honourable mentions are here.
The 1902 Pittsburgh Pirates, for instance, had the second-best winning percentage in MLB history despite winning 139 games. The 1886 Chicago White Stockings had the third-best winning percentage with a 90-34 record.
