  • A hit is when a batter reaches base after hitting the ball into fair territory.
  • A walk does not count as a hit.
  • Hit-and-run plays are used to create gaps in the infield defence.

Hits are one of many player props available in the baseball betting market at the BetMGM sportsbook

But what exactly is considered a hit in the first place?

What Is a Hit in Baseball?

A hit – also known as a “base hit” – is when a batter hits the ball into fair territory and makes it to base safely.

Even if the hitter is thrown out taking an extra base, it still counts as a hit.

What Is a Hit and Run in Baseball?

A hit and run is when a team aims to take advantage of the altered defensive positioning caused by a stolen base attempt. A base runner tries to steal, which can open up holes in the infield.

The hitter then looks to hit into the gap. Ideally, they target where the defensive players have vacated, such as hitting toward the second baseman’s spot if the second baseman has moved to cover the base.

Does a Walk Count As a Hit?

No, a walk does not count as a hit.

A walk doesn’t count as an at-bat, but it does count as a plate appearance.

What’s the Difference Between a Hit and a Single?

A single is a type of hit. When a batter records a hit, this could refer to a single, double, triple, or home run.

A single is when a batter hits a ball into fair territory and stops at first base.

What Is Not Considered a Hit in Baseball?

Along with hits, players can get on base via a walk, intentional walk, catcher’s interference, hit by pitch, fielder’s choice, or error. None of these four scenarios are recorded as a hit.

A batter is also not credited with a hit if they connect with the ball and it’s caught, they are thrown out at first, or it lands in foul territory.
