  • Detroit retains top spot in these rankings.
  • The Phillies have lost nine of their last 11 games.
  • The Athletics are on a 4-22 slide.

With a seven-game lead in the AL Central, the Detroit Tigers have held the top spot in my power rankings.

The Philadelphia Phillies have fallen several places amid a slump, while little has changed in the bottom five.

Each week, I will update these MLB power rankings, including the latest World Series odds from the baseball betting markets.

Who’s the Best MLB Team Right Now?

The Tigers’ Major League Baseball odds to win the World Series continue to shorten. They have the third-shortest odds to lift the Commissioner’s Trophy behind the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees.

Their seven-game lead atop the division is the biggest in baseball. Detroit only has a 95 wRC+ over the last fortnight, but their pitching staff is strong enough to keep the wins coming.

4. Tampa Bay Rays

I quickly ruled out the Tampa Bay Rays as my best online sportsbook to win the American League East. While I was high on their pitching upside, I didn’t think the lineup had enough firepower to win 90+ games.

Tampa Bay has the third-best run differential in the American League and sits four games behind the Yankees. Their offence has been elite over the last few weeks, powering a 15-4 run.

5. Toronto Blue Jays

Second in offence over the last fortnight and sporting an excellent bullpen, the Toronto Blue Jays have quietly surged. They are tied with the Rays for the top wild-card spot as of June 10.

The veteran rotation has been reliable throughout the season. I think the Jays are capable of being a playoff team as constructed, but I’d still like to see them add an impact bat at the trade deadline like Eugenio Suárez or Miguel Vargas.

19. Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies have lost nine of their last 11 games. Only two teams have a worse wRC+ over the last fortnight, and their troublesome bullpen is once again a major weakness with a bottom-10 relief pitcher ERA since May 27.

Four games off the divisional lead, the Phils need to get back on track quickly or they will have to settle for a place in the wild-card battle. Very few of their big-name hitters have lived up to expectations.

28. Athletics

Despite winning three of their last five, the Athletics have only won four of their last 26 games. From 22-20, they have fallen to the bottom of the AL West and are unquestionably sellers at the trade deadline.

The offence has been productive throughout this slump. The pitching staff has been abysmal. They could fall into the bottom two of these rankings if they don’t improve.

How Are MLB Power Rankings Calculated?

There are different ways to calculate MLB power rankings. Power rankings are usually subjective, and there is no fixed formula for deciding where teams are placed.

Some power rankings, however, will rank teams in different categories and then combine those rankings to build the overall list.

What Are MLB Power Rankings?

MLB power rankings are my way of showing which teams are ascending at a given moment.

They’re not judging which team is the best pick to win the World Series this year, but a look at which teams are trending in the right direction and which are having a more challenging time.
