Has There Ever Been a Walk-Off Grand Slam in the World Series?
Yes, Freddie Freeman hit the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history in Game 1 of the 2024 Fall Classic.
The bases were loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning. The New York Yankees had scored a run in the top of the inning after the Los Angeles Dodgers had tied the game in the bottom of the eighth.
With the tying run at third and the winning run at second, the Yankees intentionally walked Mookie Betts to load the bases and face Freeman.
Freeman had struggled in the playoffs with a .571 OPS in the NLDS, followed by a .377 mark in the NLCS. The matchup was theoretically in the Yankees’ favour with lefty Nestor Cortes pitching at the left-handed Freeman.
Cortes hadn’t pitched in a game in over a month. His first pitch to Freeman was a down and in 92.5 mph fastball. Freeman crushed it over the right field wall. Dodger Stadium erupted. The Dodgers took an astonishing 1-0 lead.
Having been favoured in baseball playoffs odds before the series, Freeman’s grand slam made the Dodgers clear favourites at online sportsbooks.
Freeman was only the second player in postseason history to hit a walk-off grand slam after Nelson Cruz did it for the Texas Rangers in the 2011 ALCS.
