The largest Toronto Blue Jays contracts are a mixed bag. There are two clear successes, a couple that it’s too soon to judge, a pair of mediocre deals, and one that looks set to be a failure.
The list features some players who were favoured in baseball betting markets for individual honours, and is headlined by one of the biggest contracts in sports history.
Largest Contract in Toronto Blue Jays History
7. Anthony Santander, $92.5 Million
Anthony Santander has had zero impact on the Blue Jays’ odds of winning games since he signed his five-year contract in the 2024-25 offseason.
The switch-hitting slugger had the best season of his career before hitting free agency, and it’s clear that the Jays overpaid. Injury limited Santander to only 54 games (and a 57 OPS+) in his first season as a Jay.
6. Kevin Gausman, $110 Million
The Jays handed Kevin Gausman a $110 million, five-year deal in the 2021-22 offseason. Gausman earned Cy Young votes in his first two years as a Jay and has made at least 31 starts in each of his four seasons with the team.
Durable and consistently performing at a high level, the right-hander has been one of the better free-agent signings in Jays history.
5. Vernon Wells, $126 Million
In December 2006, Vernon Wells signed a seven-year, $126 million extension with the Blue Jays. At the time, it was the sixth-largest contract in MLB history.
In the first three years of his new deal, Wells was worth 4.3 bWAR. He bounced back in the fourth season and was traded to the Los Angeles Angels in the 2010-11 offseason.
4. José Berríos, $131 Million
Since signing his seven-year extension after the 2021 season, José Berríos has posted a 100 ERA+. He’s averaged 180 innings per season.
There are three years remaining on Berríos’ contract at the time of writing. It’s unlikely he will opt out at the end of the 2026 season.
3. George Springer, $150 Million
George Springer has a 123 OPS+ as a Blue Jay. He’s entering the final year of his six-year contract and has moved to DH with younger players filling the outfield spots.
Springer’s 4.8 bWAR in 2025 was the most he’s amassed in a season since moving to Toronto. He had a number of clutch moments in the 2025 playoffs, including a Game 7 home run in the ALCS.
2. Dylan Cease, $210 Million
The seven-year contract given to Dylan Cease in the 2025-26 offseason is the largest free-agent deal in Blue Jays history. It is one of the biggest contracts ever given to a pitcher.
Cease was AL Cy Young runner-up in 2022 and finished fourth in NL Cy Young voting in 2024. He led the National League in strikeouts per nine innings in 2025.
1. Vladimir Guerrero Jr., $500 Million
Juan Soto and Shohei Ohtani are the only baseball players to have signed larger contracts than Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s 14-year, $500 million extension. Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are the only other athletes to have received bigger contracts.
Guerrero’s deal begins in the 2026 season and keeps him in Toronto until the end of the 2039 campaign.
